A Veteran’s Doubt Amid Ghana’s Coaching Revamp
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) recently made sweeping changes to the Black Stars’ technical setup, but not everyone is convinced it’s the right move. Veteran coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has labeled the restructuring as an “act of desperation,” questioning the necessity of such an extensive backroom team.
In a conversation with Peace FM, Sarpong voiced his skepticism, emphasizing that Ghanaian football’s success has never relied on excessive modernization. He recalled past eras, like CK Gyamfi’s reign, when trophies were won without the aid of laptops or video analysts.
“Are these people going to play the World Cup? That is a complete team by itself! This is desperation. The GFA should have engaged stakeholders who truly understand Ghanaian football,” he remarked.
The GFA, however, defends its decision, citing a thorough review of last year’s AFCON qualifiers as the catalyst for change. The new setup includes German coach Winfried Schäfer as Technical Advisor and Director of Football, alongside a video analysis unit led by Belgian expert Gregory De Grauwe and a sports psychologist in Kris Perquy. Head coach Otto Addo and assistant Desmond Ofei now carry the weight of proving this overhaul is more than just a knee-jerk reaction.
With mixed reactions from football stakeholders and fans alike, the coming months will determine whether this gamble pays off or if Sarpong’s fears hold true.

Rising Star Joseph Opoku Joins Radnički Niš in Serbian SuperLiga
Ghanaian left-back Joseph Opoku has taken a significant step in his football journey, signing a two-year contract with Serbian SuperLiga club Radnički Niš, with an option for renewal.
At just 20 years old, Opoku has shown resilience and determination in his career path. After developing his skills with Torino’s U-19 team, he moved to Italian Serie D club Vado FC in 2023, where he featured in 24 matches. His performances caught the attention of Radnički Niš, who monitored him closely during test games last summer. However, the club had to complete all necessary paperwork before making his signing official.
“This is a major step in my career, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Opoku shared. “I’m excited to be part of this amazing club.”
The former EurAfrica FC player sees his move to Serbia’s top flight as a crucial stage in his development. With high ambitions and a hunger to prove himself, Opoku is ready to make his mark in the SuperLiga and further his dream of playing at the highest level.

Harrogate Town faced a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Milton Keynes Dons at Stadium MK, despite a dramatic late goal from English-Ghanaian defender Zico Asare.
The match began with MK Dons taking the lead in the 28th minute when Joe White capitalized on a precise assist from Dan Crowley to score from inside the box. MK Dons dominated possession and continued to create opportunities, but Harrogate’s defense held strong, limiting their chances.
With the game winding down, hope emerged for Harrogate in stoppage time. Asare, who had been substituted in the 80th minute for Bryant Bilongo, made an immediate impact. In the 92nd minute, he seized a well-delivered corner and hammered a stunning right-footed strike into the top corner, marking his first goal of the season and leveling the score at 1-1.
However, just two minutes later, MK Dons’ Alex Gilbey silenced the visitors with a brilliant long-range shot, securing a 2-1 victory for the hosts. The result extended MK Dons’ strong record against Harrogate, having now won three out of their last four encounters.

After a highly successful debut event in December 2024, the Thomas Partey Tournament is returning for its second edition in June 2025, with a renewed focus on discovering and nurturing the next generation of Ghanaian football talent. The tournament, aimed at players aged 16 to 18, will take place from June 10th to 13th, with scouts from Europe and the USA in attendance to identify top prospects.
Tournament Details:
Date: June 10th – 13th, 2025
Location: The tournament will begin with preliminary phases in Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, with dates for these phases to be announced soon.
Participating Teams: 12 teams will be selected from the preliminary rounds, with any team or academy interested in participating required to email [email protected] for more details and the rules of the competition.
Age Group: Players born in 2007, 2008, and 2009 will be eligible, with special cases for those born in 2010 and 2011.
Scouting Opportunities: Top scouts from European and American clubs will be in attendance to watch and identify standout players.
Special Guests: Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and his agent, Jose Daniel Jiminez, will attend the event, showing their continued commitment to Ghanaian football development.
The maiden edition of the tournament proved to be a resounding success, with eight young talents earning the opportunity to trial at some of Europe’s top football clubs. This second edition promises to bring even more exposure and potential opportunities for young players looking to make their mark on the global stage.

The next generation of Ghanaian football stars is set to converge at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence as the Black Satellites resume camp for the second phase of their player assessment exercise.
With the U-20 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire fast approaching, Head Coach Desmond Ofei and his technical team are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to assemble a formidable squad. Thirty-eight promising players from the Ghana Premier League, Division One, and lower-tier leagues have been invited to Prampram, each eager to stake a claim for a spot in the national U-20 team.
Fresh off their gold medal triumph at the Africa Games, the Black Satellites are keen to build on that success. Coach Ofei has emphasized the importance of healthy competition, stating that new talents must challenge the current squad members for a place in the final team.
As the camp kicks off on February 2, all eyes will be on the young footballers who dream of donning the Ghana jersey on the continental stage. The technical team remains optimistic that this exercise will unearth the next big stars capable of leading Ghana to glory in Côte d’Ivoire.
