Amid the chaos of civil unrest and the suspension of domestic football, Sudan’s national team achieved a remarkable feat—qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The man behind this triumph, Kwesi Appiah, leaned heavily on players from Al Hilal and Al Merreikh to navigate an uphill battle.
Appiah, a former Ghana captain and coach of the Black Stars during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, took on the role of Sudan’s head coach under extraordinary circumstances. Speaking on TV3, he declared that sports in the country is in decline, citing the Black Stars’ recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a significant blow.
For the first time in two decades, Ghana’s iconic Black Stars, four-time AFCON champions, will not grace the prestigious tournament, set to take place in Morocco later this year. The team’s qualifying campaign ended in disappointment, with three draws and three losses leaving them at the bottom of Group F with a mere three points.
Kwakye Ofosu expressed concern about the ripple effects of this failure, noting that it has dampened the enthusiasm of many Ghanaians for sports.
“In the sporting arena, there is little to be excited about these days,” he remarked. “As a Ghanaian sports fan, I support the Black Stars, but we failed to qualify for the AFCON tournament, and many Ghanaians have lost interest in what the national teams do.”
He also highlighted the waning passion for domestic football, confessing, “I claim I support Hearts of Oak, but I don’t even know one player from the club, nor do I know a single player from Asante Kotoko. Sports is essentially dead in this country, and rekindling public interest in supporting our national teams is now a difficult task.”
Despite the current gloom, the Black Stars will have an opportunity to redeem themselves in March 2025 when they take on Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
