Noah Atubolu, SC Freiburg’s 22-year-old goalkeeper, is not only making waves with his performances on the pitch but also navigating the challenges of racism in professional football. Born in Freiburg to Nigerian parents, Atubolu’s journey has been marked by undeniable talent and strength in the face of adversity.
Atubolu, who has represented Germany at multiple youth levels and won the Fritz Walter Medal U19 Bronze in 2021, has often drawn comparisons to Manuel Neuer for his goalkeeping skills. However, his path hasn’t been without hurdles. Despite his efforts as Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper—starting 15 of the club’s 17 Bundesliga games this season and achieving four clean sheets—he has been subjected to racist abuse, even from a minority within his club’s fanbase.
The young shot-stopper faced intense criticism after a costly error in Freiburg’s match against Holstein Kiel. Yet, with remarkable composure, he redeemed himself with a game-saving stop in injury time, securing a 3-2 victory. Despite such standout moments, the vitriol intensified following a 0-3 defeat to FC St. Pauli on matchday five, with social media users targeting him with hateful comments.
Atubolu has chosen to keep his distance from social media, focusing on his craft instead. “I’m not someone who is constantly on social media,” he told Kicker. However, he acknowledged that racism has been a recurring issue in his career. “I feel that my skin colour has not made things easier for me with some fans. I’m afraid that will never stop in football, sadly.”
Freiburg captain Christian Günter has strongly defended Atubolu, praising his work ethic and resilience. “We have a very talented goalkeeper who is reflective and knows when he has made mistakes. He works very hard,” Günter said, urging critics to remain constructive and avoid comments that “go below the belt.”
Atubolu’s athleticism, highlighted by setting a sprint record of 32.5 km/h this season, and his determination have drawn interest from clubs like West Ham. A product of Freiburg’s youth academy, he has made 49 Bundesliga appearances since his debut in August 2023, solidifying his position as the team’s trusted shot-stopper.
While Atubolu’s story is a testament to his talent and determination, it also underscores the need for football to confront racism head-on. Despite the challenges, he continues to rise, proving himself as one of Germany’s most promising goalkeepers.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of the Nigerian national football team. Tasked with the daunting challenge of securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chelle inherits a team and a nation desperate for redemption.
His appointment, announced by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has sparked conversations across the Nigerian football community, with many expressing cautious optimism. Among them is former Super Eagles midfielder Sylvanus Okpala, who didn’t mince words when assessing the weight of Chelle’s new role.
“The point is that if we don’t qualify for the World Cup, we have failed,” Okpala declared during an interview with Brila FM.
This blunt assessment comes as a sobering reminder of the Super Eagles’ heartbreaking miss in 2022, when they lost out to Ghana on away goals. Another failure to qualify, Okpala warned, would be a devastating blow to Nigerian football.
“Nigeria cannot afford to miss the World Cup for the second time. It will be disastrous. Things are tough, but not impossible. With six games left, there is still room to recover,” he emphasized.
The pressure on Chelle is immense. His first tests will be crucial qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, games the Super Eagles cannot afford to lose. The former Lens defender must rally his squad quickly, knowing that the eyes of a football-loving nation are fixed on him.
However, Okpala also called out the NFF, urging them to take responsibility for their decisions. He warned against using Chelle’s mid-qualifier appointment as a scapegoat should Nigeria falter.
“They shouldn’t later claim that the situation was already beyond repair before his appointment. If that was the case, they should have waited until after the qualifiers to appoint him,” Okpala concluded.

Young Forward Set to Reinvent Career in Spain’s Primera Federación
CA Osasuna have officially signed Nigerian striker Sixtus Ogbuehi on a loan deal from CD Eldense until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent. The 21-year-old forward will initially join Osasuna Promesas, the reserve side competing in the Primera Federación – Group 2.
Ogbuehi, who was part of Nigeria’s U23 squad in 2023, has shown great potential since his days at Campos FC in Owerri, Nigeria. The towering 192-centimeter striker first gained prominence during the 2021/22 season, where he scored nine goals in 16 appearances in the Nigerian National League. His performances caught the attention of European scouts, earning him moves to Spanish clubs Moralo and Ceuta B.
Last season, Ogbuehi proved his goal-scoring prowess, netting 18 goals across two clubs in Spain’s Fifth Division. His impressive run saw him make a significant leap to CD Eldense in La Liga Hypermotion, Spain’s second tier. However, his transition to a higher level proved challenging, as he managed only five league appearances and one Copa del Rey outing.
Osasuna Promesas, currently sitting 11th in the Primera Federación with 25 points, are looking to strengthen their attack for the second half of the season. Head coach Santi Castillejo is banking on Ogbuehi’s physical presence and finishing ability to improve their goal tally and push the team up the standings.
The Pamplona-based club highlighted the optional purchase clause in the deal, providing Ogbuehi with a chance to secure a permanent move should he impress during his loan spell.
Ogbuehi’s signing represents a fresh opportunity to reignite his career and fulfill the promise that saw him rise through the ranks in Nigeria and Spain.

Super Eagles Begin New Era Under Eric Chelle
The newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, kicked off his tenure in Nigeria on a high note, witnessing a spirited 3-2 victory by the home-based Super Eagles against Sunshine Stars in a friendly match held on Tuesday in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Chelle, who arrived in Nigeria on Sunday from Algeria, was officially unveiled on Monday in Abuja. Alongside his mandate to lead Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Malian tactician has been tasked with overseeing the development of the home-based Super Eagles squad, who are preparing for the rescheduled 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Shortly after his unveiling, Chelle traveled to Ikenne with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen to meet the home-based squad and their coaching team, led by Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu.
The team put on an impressive display, with goals from Isaac Saviour, Anas Yusuf, and Ikouwem Utin securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sunshine Stars of Akure. Chelle, observing from the sidelines, praised the players for their performance and expressed satisfaction with the team’s readiness.
Assistant coaches Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu also expressed their excitement at working under Chelle, pledging their full support. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Ilechukwu said, “My humble self and my colleagues were so excited to receive our boss, Eric Chelle… I’m ready to learn from the boss and support him. Welcome to Nigeria, Coach Eric.”
Coach Ogunmodede echoed similar sentiments, sharing, “I am extremely excited to receive our esteemed National Team Coach, Éric Sékou Chelle… We extend our best wishes to our Head Coach for an inspiring and successful journey ahead.”
Although preparations for CHAN 2024 are in full swing, the camping program may pause following CAF’s decision to reschedule the tournament from February to August to allow host nations Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to improve infrastructure.
The draw for the competition, held on January 15 in Kenya, placed Nigeria in a challenging group alongside defending champions Senegal, Sudan, and Congo. This marks the Super Eagles’ return to CHAN for the first time since 2018.
