Ghana international and Stade Rennais right-back Alidu Seidu has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a Ligue 1 clash against Lille in November. The injury, which occurred just 18 minutes into the game, forced Seidu off the pitch, with Senegalese youngster Mikayil Faye stepping in as his replacement.
Following thorough medical examinations, the 23-year-old underwent surgery on Monday, marking the start of his long road to recovery. Stade Rennais confirmed the procedure, stating, “Victim of a ruptured cruciate ligament in his knee during the match against LOSC, our Ghanaian international will now be able to concentrate on his rehabilitation and re-athleticisation. Strength to you, Alidu.”
The defender took to social media to express his optimism and gratitude, writing, “My surgery went very well! Now to rehab. I’m going to work hard with the help of my people to get back on the field as soon as possible. Thank you, everyone, for your messages and support; it means a lot.”
Seidu, who joined Stade Rennais in January 2024 from Clermont Foot, was in stellar form before his injury, earning the club’s September Player of the Month award. Unfortunately, the recovery process will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season, ruling him out of Ghana’s crucial World Cup qualifiers in March 2025 against Chad and Madagascar.

Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top performers this season, earning recognition for his relentless displays for AFC Bournemouth. Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, will close the year 2024 ranked 77th in the world and 14th in Africa on the latest FIFA Rankings. Despite retaining their continental position, their global ranking reflects a turbulent year for the once-proud footballing nation.
Under the leadership of Otto Addo, the Black Stars endured one of their most disappointing campaigns in recent history. The team managed only three wins from 15 matches across all competitions, with just two of those being in official games. Most notably, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—a first in 20 years—after failing to secure a single win in the qualifiers.
In February, Ghana achieved its highest FIFA ranking of the year at 67th. However, a steady decline saw them slip to 73rd in October before dropping to their current position in November. Despite the setbacks, their 14th spot in Africa places them ahead of Zambia and Gabon but behind Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.
Globally, the top ten remains unchanged, with Argentina leading the pack, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil rounding out the top five.
