Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed it is reviewing all footage from the 2025 AFCON final in Rabat, condemning what it described as “unacceptable behavior” by certain Senegalese players and officials.
CAF emphasized that any inappropriate actions targeting referees or match organizers are intolerable. All footage from the final is being carefully reviewed, with the matter set to be referred to the relevant disciplinary bodies for possible sanctions.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino echoed CAF’s concerns, describing the behavior of some Senegalese players and supporters as “ugly” and completely unacceptable.
Writing on social media, Infantino stated:
“We witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands. We strongly condemn the conduct of some supporters, as well as Senegalese players and technical staff. Leaving the field in such a manner is unacceptable, and violence has no place in our sport.”
The comments follow the chaos in the final after Senegal coach Pape Thiaw instructed most of his players to leave the pitch in protest of a VAR-confirmed penalty awarded to Morocco following a foul on Brahim Diaz.
Scenes captured on camera showed some Senegalese supporters violently destroying stadium seats and using them against security personnel attempting to prevent a pitch invasion. By football rules, abandoning a match could result in a 3–0 default victory for the opposing team.
However, the situation was defused when Senegal captain Sadio Mane convinced his teammates to return to the field and complete the game. Senegal went on to score the decisive goal in extra time, ultimately winning the title.
Infantino stressed that such actions have no place in football and urged the Senegalese team to act responsibly, highlighting the importance of setting a positive example for fans. He also expressed confidence that CAF’s disciplinary bodies would take the necessary measures to address the incident.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw is facing the possibility of a World Cup touchline ban following dramatic and controversial scenes during Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco.
Thiaw, who eventually guided Senegal to a 1–0 extra-time victory and a second AFCON title, came under intense scrutiny after ordering his players to walk off the pitch deep into stoppage time. Despite the historic success, celebrations were short-lived for Thiaw. The 44-year-old is expected to face disciplinary action, with a touchline ban the most likely outcome. With Senegal’s next competitive fixtures scheduled for this summer’s World Cup in North America, any suspension could be served at the tournament.
The newly crowned African champions are set to open their World Cup campaign against France in New York, before group matches against Norway and one of Bolivia, Iraq, or Suriname—pending the intercontinental play-offs.

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed that the toughest pressure he experienced while playing for Ghana did not come against Africa’s or the world’s elite teams, but rather in matches where the Black Stars were heavy favourites.
Gyan, one of Ghana’s greatest footballers, first rose to global prominence at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, where his goals announced him on the world stage.
He later became Africa’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer and Ghana’s highest scorer in international football.
Speaking in a recent interview with former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, the ex-Ghana captain explained that representing the national team always came with expectation, but the mental strain was greatest when Ghana faced supposedly weaker opponents.
“There was always pressure playing for Ghana,” Gyan said.
“Where I felt it most was playing against the minnows, with no disrespect to them. When you play teams you are statistically better than, they have nothing to lose, but we have everything to lose. That is when I really felt the pressure. Against the big teams, I didn’t feel it as much.”
Gyan officially retired from professional football in June 2023, bringing the curtain down on a decorated career that left a lasting legacy in Ghanaian and African football history.
