The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), the nation’s premier sports journalism body, has announced the nominees for the 49th edition of the prestigious SWAG Awards. The event, recognized as Ghana’s longest-running awards scheme for celebrating sports excellence, has been held annually since 1975.
A statement by SWAG General Secretary, Charles Osei Asibey, confirmed that this year’s ceremony will take place at the Accra International Conference Center on Friday, January 24, 2025, starting at 6:00 PM. Over 80 top-performing athletes, officials, and institutions who contributed to sports development in the year under review have been shortlisted for honors across multiple categories.
Notable nominees include swimmer Abeiku Jackson, athlete Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa, and football clubs Hasaacas Ladies and Dreams FC. Corporate entities like Access Bank and KGL also made the list for their contributions to sports development.
Key Categories Include:
Sports Personality of the Year: Grace Mintah (Armwrestling) and Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa (Athletics)
Student Athlete of the Year: William Amponsah and Mariam Yussif
National Team of the Year: Black Challenge (Amputee Football) and Black Sticks Ladies (Hockey)
Club of the Year: FC Samartex and Hasaacas Ladies

Top golf professionals, including Nigeria’s number one and defending champion, Sunday Olapade, are set to compete in the fifth edition of the annual Ultimate Golf Challenge. The event will take place at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 on Friday, December 20.
The 36-hole tournament will feature notable players such as former Order of Merit winner Oche Odoh, Francis Epe, Ikoyi Club-based Monday Eze, Willy Gift from Port Harcourt, Femi Olagbenro, Barry Yaw Dradey from Achimota Golf Club in Ghana, Bashiru Bakare, Kamalu Bako, Emos Korblah, and former champion Vincent Torgah. Rising America-based star Tokunbo Pedro, who has competed in China and the United States, is also among the top names expected.
Akin Semowo, chairman of the Ultimate Golf Challenge organizing committee, emphasized the tournament’s role in advancing professional golf and supporting players in Nigeria. “Our mission has always been to promote professional golf in Nigeria and uplift the players. We remain committed to this vision,” he said.

Kenneth Bouhairie, a Ghanaian native and USA-based public relations professional, serves as the Director and Head of Public Relations for Premier Boxing Champions (PBC)/Haymon Boxing. With over 20 years of experience in the boxing industry, Kenneth has worked closely with renowned boxers such as Gervonta Davis, Canelo Alvarez, Deontay Wilder, Errol Spence, Terence Crawford, the Charlo twins (Jermall and Jermell), Adrien Broner, Caleb Plant, Edgar Berlanga, and David Benavidez.
He is also the founder of BoxingAfrica.com, a platform dedicated to promoting African boxing, particularly in Ghana. His contributions to the sport have earned him four awards from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Kenneth is also a voting member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, highlighting his influence and expertise in the field.

Dutch football star Memphis Depay, in collaboration with Nii Gonti Adjor I (Nii Adamah Addy), CEO of The Gym/Omashi TV, Box Office Promotions, and the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), organized a special Juvenile and Amateur Boxing Tournament at the Old Kingsway Building in Ussher Town on Friday. The event drew an impressive crowd and celebrated the future of Ghanaian boxing.
Notable attendees included Nana Yaw Bediako, popularly known as “Cheddar,” a presidential aspirant and third-place finisher in Ghana’s presidential elections, as well as Alhaji Dauda Fuseni and Solomon Otoo, First and Second Vice Presidents of the GBF. All commended the initiative and emphasized the importance of nurturing young boxing talents.
Memphis Depay, now playing for Corinthians in Brazil, graced the event as the star and special guest. He handed out certificates and medals to participants, pledging to donate boxing equipment to support Ghana’s aspiring boxers.
Cheddar praised the tournament, congratulating the young participants and recognizing their potential to become future champions. Similarly, Alhaji Dauda Fuseni and Alex Ntiamoah Boakye of Box Office Promotions highlighted the significance of building a strong foundation for Ghanaian boxing through juvenile and amateur competitions.
The tournament, dubbed Memphis Depay Fight Day, showcased exceptional talents, including juvenile boxers such as Nii Tettey Quaye, Joseph Nartey, Austin Ansah, Rashid Amu, Michael Quaye, Godfred Nunoo, Eric Vorsah, Blessing Lartey, and Lydia Lartey. Youth boxers like Nii Moi Allotey, Joseph Salifu, William Laryea, and Ibrahim Doku also impressed the audience.
Elite boxers Mubarak Amarh, Bernard Kotey, Stephen Armah (Attoh Kwashie Gym), Nelleys Dodoo (Sea View Gym), Precious Nartey (Attoh Kwashie Gym), and Robert Lokko (The Gym) rounded off the exciting event.
