Black Rockets Head to Montenegro to Represent Ghana in World Youth Boxing Championship

Ghana’s national youth boxing team, the Black Rockets, departed Accra on Saturday night for Montenegro to participate in the upcoming IBA World Youth Championship. Led by the Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, and head coach Charles Quartey, the team is seen as the future of Ghanaian boxing.

Augustus Dodoo, also known as “One Life,” an organizer with the Ghana United Boxing Coaches Association, praised the young athletes, stating that they are highly motivated to win for their families and country. The team, which includes Francis Quartey, Desmond Pappoe, Levy Ankrah, Ebenezer Ankrah, Mathias Ashitey, and George Dowuona, are making their international debut.

Dodoo emphasized the importance of this tournament, noting that the boxers have been preparing for over a year and expressed gratitude to Vice President Dauda Fuseni for making the trip possible. GBF’s second vice president, Solomon Otoo, added that the experience will provide invaluable exposure for the athletes and urged the government to support future trips.

The Black Rockets, aged between 16 and 18, have been training at the Charles Quartey Foundation Boxing Gym and are determined to make Ghana proud on the global stage.

The African finals of the Afro Break International Championship 2024 will take place on October 27, 2024, at La Fase Gardens in Labadi, Accra, opposite the Bethel Presby Church. Nana Tufour Okai, also known as B-boy Lyricx, the President of the Ghana Breaking Federation, announced that this year’s event will be the largest yet, with participation from 20 African nations, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Liberia, Senegal, and more.

The event promises exciting prizes, with the winner taking home the ultimate championship belt. Ghana will be represented by B-boy Nagi, who is eager to improve upon the country’s previous performance. Last year’s runner-up, B-boy Blesso of Ghana, encouraged the new champion to give their best effort on home soil.

Leading up to the finals, workshops, conferences, and other activities will take place starting October 25. B-boy Lyricx expressed gratitude to supporters, including the Ghana Olympic Committee, the National Sports Authority, and the French Embassy in Ghana. He also highlighted the growing popularity of breaking in Accra, especially among the youth.

Breaking was featured as a new sport at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Fuseni highlighted the importance of the tournament, which will feature over 80 nations, as a chance for the Ghanaian boxers, all traveling abroad for the first time, to showcase their talent and establish themselves as future stars. He also stressed the need for humility, respect, and obedience to their trainers as key to their success.

Ghana’s team, consisting of six boxers aged 17 to 19, will be led by Coach Charles Quartey, with support from officials Mustapha Nettey, Solomon Otoo, and delegation leader Dauda Fuseni.

The Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana, will come alive on Friday, November 23, 2025, when Ayitey Powers Promotions presents the highly anticipated ‘Battle of the Beasts.’ The headline bout will see former national cruiserweight champion Jacob Dickson of Bronx Boxing Gym face off against current champion Haruna Mohammed of Wisdom Boxing Gym.

Both fighters have been vocal ahead of the match, with Dickson, nicknamed ‘The Beast,’ eager to reclaim the title he believes was unfairly stripped from him by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA). His opponent, Haruna Mohammed, is confident in his ability to defend his belt as the reigning champion.

Dickson is trained by Coach Carl Lokko, while Haruna is under the guidance of national coach Dr. Ofori Asare. The GBA has approved the event, which also features a rematch between Ernest Akushey (‘Baubali’) and Elvis Ahorgah (‘Soldier Boxer’), along with other exciting matchups involving top boxers like Michael Abban and Joseph Akai Nettey.

Samuel Martei Laryea of Ghana secured a dominant victory over Nigeria’s Lukman Akinolugbade, stopping him in five rounds to win the Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) Africa Super Bantamweight title. The bout, held at Akropong Akuapem in the Eastern Region of Ghana, headlined the 2024 Odwira Fight Night event, titled “The Eastern Brawl,” at the forecourt of the Akropong Palace.

Laryea controlled the fight from the start, overwhelming his Nigerian opponent despite Akinolugbade’s early resistance. Speaking after his victory, Laryea credited his corner for advising a shift in tactics that led to a decisive body-focused attack. “I wasn’t surprised when he gave up. I knew the body shots were devastating,” Laryea said.

The event was sponsored by Oseadeeyo Kwesi Akuffo III, Omanhene of the Okuapeman Traditional Council. Other notable fights included Cann Kotey Neequaye, son of the Ghana Boxing Authority president, stopping Theophilus Tetteh, and Seth Gyimah, aka Freezy Macbones, defeating Marciano Commey in one round.
