Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu has expressed his satisfaction with his debut season at AS Monaco in the French league. The towering centre-back played a crucial role in helping the club qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, finishing behind champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite being sidelined for much of the first half of the season due to injury, Salisu made a strong comeback, contributing significantly to AS Monaco’s impressive second-half campaign. Reflecting on his performance, Salisu shared his positive outlook.
“With my club, I had only ups. For me, I am satisfied with my performance. We ended up in a good position and we are in the Champions League, so I just need to focus on next season,” he told reporters during the Black Stars training at the Legon Sports Stadium.
The former Southampton defender made 12 league appearances and provided an assist during the recently concluded season. The 25-year-old is set to travel with the Black Stars to Bamako for their matchday 3 fixture in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances ahead of their critical World Cup qualifier against Mali in Bamako on Thursday, June 6.
After five days of intensive training in Accra, the Black Stars will depart for Bamako on Tuesday to prepare for the Group I headliner.
Salisu, who ended the season strongly with AS Monaco in France, is expected to play a pivotal role for the team in Bamako. “This game is very important for every Ghanaian. It is a World Cup qualifier, and we know how crucial it is for Ghanaians. We have talented young players, and Ghanaians need to believe in us. We can do better,” Salisu told reporters during the Black Stars’ training session in Legon.
He added, “We know it’s not going to be easy. Mali has a strong team. We have to train day by day, and hopefully, we will win this game.”

The Black Stars are set to leave Accra for Bamako on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Mali.
Otto Addo’s squad has been training in Accra for the past four days to prepare for this pivotal match. The game is scheduled to take place at the Stade du 26 Mars on Thursday, with kickoff at 7 pm local time.
The Black Stars aim to bounce back from a lackluster start to the qualifiers, having secured a 1-0 win over Madagascar but suffering a 1-0 loss to Comoros in November of last year. They are seeking their first win in five matches across all competitions, with their recent record standing at two defeats and three draws.
Following the match against Mali, the Black Stars will face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Monday, June 10, 2024. Winning these two games is crucial for reviving Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Dutch-Ghanaian footballer Memphis Depay has written a heartfelt farewell message to Atletico Madrid, announcing his departure following the expiration of his contract. Depay and the club mutually decided not to extend his contract after an 18-month stint in the Spanish capital.

Expressing his emotions on X (formerly Twitter), Depay wrote, “It’s not easy to say how I feel about writing this message because I feel that things could’ve been very different. Maybe it’s better to keep that conversation for another time.”
He continued, “To Atletico Madrid, my teammates, the staff, and especially the fans, I want to thank you for the energy and support I’ve experienced during my time as an Atleti player. I keep the good memories close to my heart. Gracias. Aupa Atleti!”
Born to Ghanaian parents in Mordrecht, Depay often vacations in Ghana. He is currently with the Dutch national team, preparing for the European Championship in Germany this summer.
