Former coach of Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, Laryea Kingston, has issued an apology to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Ghanaians after resigning from his position. The ex-Black Stars player stepped down following the Starlets’ defeat by Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship last Saturday at the University of Ghana Stadium.
In a statement, the GFA expressed concerns regarding the 43-year-old’s conduct. Kingston has since accepted full responsibility for the team’s performance and the disappointment felt by Ghanaians.
“I sincerely apologize to the President and the Exco for any misunderstanding, inconvenience, and embarrassment caused by my decision to announce my resignation last Saturday,” Kingston stated. “Upon reflection, I realize I could have handled the situation better, and this experience will serve as a valuable lesson for me moving forward.”
He added, “We aim to conclude the tournament on a high note by securing the bronze medal against Nigeria. Thank you.”
The Black Starlets are set to face Nigeria for third place on Tuesday afternoon at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Great Olympics midfielder Gladson Awako is confident that his team will avoid relegation by the end of the Ghana Premier League season.
Despite their recent victory over Berekum Chelsea on matchday 31, Great Olympics remain in the relegation zone, sitting 16th in the standings with 36 points. However, they have a chance to secure their spot in the league with four games remaining, including an outstanding match against Dreams FC.
Speaking to the media, the former Hearts of Oak midfielder expressed his optimism about Great Olympics’ survival. “For sure, we will stay in the Ghana Premier League. We are capable and we are going to work to the last minute to escape relegation,” Awako stated.
Great Olympics face a challenging match against Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium on matchday 32. Dropping points is not an option for the team as they fight to remain in the top-flight league.
Awako, who rejoined Great Olympics before the start of the second round of the season after leaving Hearts of Oak, remains determined to help his team stay up.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium pitch will be unavailable for domestic competitions until after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic. This closure aims to allow sufficient time for pitch improvements ahead of the qualifier scheduled for Monday, June 10, 2024.
Ghana will play the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, following a clash with Mali in Bamako four days earlier.
As a result, the Ghana Premier League Matchday 32 fixture between Asante Kotoko and Accra Great Olympics, initially set for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, will now take place at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Relevant stakeholders are advised to take note and make necessary arrangements.

Ghana’s amputee football team, the Black Challenge, captured the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup of Nations title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Morocco in the final held in Cairo on Monday.
Despite trailing early in the first half, Ghana staged a remarkable comeback in the second half and extra time to secure the win. This victory marks their successful defense of the title, having won the previous edition in 2021.
The Black Challenge also completed a double over Morocco within the past year, having defeated them by the same scoreline in September 2023 to win the inaugural African Para Games.
“We feel very proud. The God we trusted made it happen. We’re champions in Africa for the third time in the space of two years. Despite the challenges we went through, we did it. It is a massive motivation to everybody that you might not have the support you need but you can go beyond the odds and make it happen,” said Stephen Richard Obeng, head coach of the Black Challenge, in an interview with 3Sports following the victory.
The team is set to return to Ghana on Tuesday morning. With this win, they have secured a spot in the Amputee World Cup scheduled for 2026.
