The University of Ghana Stadium has been chosen as the host venue for the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations (AFCON), acting as the qualifying platform for the 2024 U-17 African Cup of Nations.
Commencing on May 15, 2024, the tournament will showcase the talents of seven West African nations: Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Togo, as they compete for a coveted spot in the AFCON.
Host nation Ghana has been placed in Group A alongside Benin and Cote d’Ivoire, while Group B comprises Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Togo.
Utilizing the recently completed University of Ghana Stadium, which previously hosted the African Games in 2023, the tournament promises to offer a high-quality venue for the thrilling matches ahead.

Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to backing Ghanaian clubs participating in CAF Inter-club competitions, promising ongoing financial and logistical support.
Okraku specifically highlighted the recent accomplishments of Dreams FC and Medeama, lauding their breakthrough achievements which ended Ghana’s years of continental setbacks. Dreams FC secured a spot in the group stages of the Confederation Cup, while Medeama advanced to the same stage in the Champions League.
In a statement quoted by Ghanafa.org, Okraku stated, “Consistent with our tradition of supporting all Ghanaian clubs in Africa, the FA will continue to provide both financial assistance and logistical backing.”
He further elaborated on the support provided to Dreams FC, including facilitating evening games by fueling generators at the stadium, exemplifying the FA’s commitment to aiding clubs in their continental endeavors.
Despite Dreams FC’s commendable journey, they were eliminated in the semi-finals after a 3-0 loss to Zamalek in Kumasi, following a goalless draw in Cairo. However, they have the opportunity to return to the competition through this season’s FA Cup.
On the other hand, Medeama’s Champions League campaign concluded with a bottom finish in Group D, registering just one victory. They currently trail by 12 points in the Ghana Premier League standings.
