Former West Ham standout Frederic Kanoute has voiced his confidence in Mohammed Kudus’ potential to secure the African Footballer of the Year accolade.
Kudus has garnered widespread acclaim during his debut season with West Ham, notching 13 goals in 30 appearances across various competitions. Impressively, he made a mark during his maiden African Cup of Nations appearance in Ivory Coast by scoring twice in a notable 2-2 draw against Egypt.
Such performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with admiration coming from esteemed figures like Frederic Kanoute, the 2007 CAF Player of the Year.
“He is exceptionally talented. Kudus possesses a diverse skill set—he’s robust, agile, and versatile across multiple positions. Despite his youth, he stands out as one of Africa’s most promising players today. I firmly believe he stands a chance,” Kanoute expressed on the Irons Podcast.
During his own tenure with West Ham United from 2000 to 2003, Frederic Kanoute showcased his prowess, netting 27 goals in 76 appearances. On the international stage, he represented Mali, accumulating 23 goals in 38 appearances from 2004 to 2010.

The Sports Ministry of Ghana has engaged in discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) regarding the possibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as revealed by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif in an interview with GHOne TV.
Ussif highlighted the positive nature of the preliminary talks, mentioning the recent visit of the president of the Commonwealth Games to Ghana. The minister noted that Ghana’s facilities were assessed during the visit, and discussions were held regarding the nation’s potential to host the prestigious event.
“Their programs indicate a desire for an African nation to host the Commonwealth Games, and Ghana, with its current infrastructure, is well-positioned for the opportunity,” Ussif stated.
The 2026 Games currently lack a host city after Malaysia declined the CGF’s offer, citing concerns over time constraints, costs, and insufficient funding. Malaysia’s decision came after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to escalating expenses.
Ussif addressed concerns about the financial burden associated with hosting such an event, emphasizing that hosting the Commonwealth Games would not incur costs comparable to those of organizing the African Games.
“The funding for the Commonwealth Games can be supplemented by the Commonwealth Games Secretariat, making it a less financially strenuous endeavor compared to other major sporting events,” Ussif explained.
However, the high costs and legacy issues associated with hosting such events have deterred potential host countries. Notably, Victoria in Australia withdrew from hosting the Games due to projected costs exceeding $4.8 billion.
Ussif underscored the need for prudent financial planning and emphasized that the exact costs and funding sources for hosting the Games in Ghana are yet to be determined.
Ghana’s recent investment of over $289 million to host the 2023 African Games demonstrates its commitment to developing sporting infrastructure and fostering international sporting events.

Following the conclusion of the 13th African Games, President of the Ghana Swimming Association, Mrs. Delphina Quaye, has disclosed that the National Sports Authority (NSA) has been designated to manage the Borteyman Sports Complex.
Constructed at a cost of $145 million by the government for the continental event, the facility officially commenced operations on March 8, spanning a duration of 15 days.
While concerns linger regarding the NSA’s capacity to efficiently oversee the facility, the Local Organizing Committee chairman for the Games proposed exploring a “Private-Public Partnership” to ensure its sustainable commercial operation.
However, Mrs. Delphina clarified that the government has entrusted the NSA with the responsibility of maintaining the infrastructure.
Confirming the status quo, she exclusively informed JoySports, “What we know is that it’s been handed over to the NSA.”
In regards to the Ghana Swimming Association’s efforts to utilize the facility for competitions, Mrs. Delphina revealed, “After the Games, I approached the NSA with a letter requesting the use of the pool. They indicated that it wouldn’t be free. While we understand this, we are yet to receive a response from them, it’s been two weeks.”
Expressing optimism about the facility’s potential impact on the country’s sporting future, Mrs. Delphina emphasized, “The pool is fully certified and internationally recognized as an Olympic-sized facility. For us at the federation, we view it as a significant step towards achieving our future goals.”
Ghana secured two medals at the African Games, courtesy of Captain Abeku Jackson’s silver and bronze achievements.
