Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., renowned for its expertise in waste management across Africa, is playing a pivotal role in maintaining pristine environments for the ongoing 13th African Games hosted in Accra, Ghana.
The company has mobilized approximately 15 brand new waste collection trucks to handle the solid waste generated at the four sporting venues.
Mr. Ernest Kusi, Director of Service Quality and Monitoring at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, highlighted the company’s responsibilities, which include scientific cleaning, environmental sanitation, solid and liquid waste management, fumigation, and medical waste management at venues such as the Borteyman Sports Complex, Achimota Oval, Accra Sports Stadium, and the Bukom Emporium.
He emphasized Zoomlion’s commitment to source separation by providing well-labeled bins for both plastic and general waste, with plastics earmarked for recycling to add value.
Mr. Kusi underscored Zoomlion’s extensive experience in providing sanitation services, referencing their contributions to major sports tournaments like CAN 2008 and CAN 2010 in Ghana and Angola, respectively.
Mr. Seth Appiah Ocran, a manager with Zoomlion’s Monitoring and Evaluation unit stationed at the Bukom Emporium,13 urged patrons to dispose of waste properly in designated bins, emphasizing the importance of sending a positive sanitation message from Ghana to the world.
In preparation for the Games, Zoomlion provided specialized training to its sanitation officers at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS) at Bundase Training Camp. The rigorous two-week training covered essential skills such as management, drill, cleaning techniques, self-discipline, physical fitness, time management, team work, crowd control, and scientific cleaning.
The 13th African Games, taking place in Ghana from March 8 to March 23, 2024, marks the second time in history that the games have been decentralized, with events hosted across three cities: Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.

Bawa Fuseini, the president of Ghana Athletics, expressed confidence in the country’s performance at the 13th All African Games, citing the crucial support received from the government as a key factor.
During a media briefing held on Sunday, March 17, 2024, on the sidelines of the ongoing games, Fuseini highlighted the strides made by Ghana’s athletics team, especially in relay events, thanks to government assistance facilitated by the Minister for Youth and Sports.
“This time we have very talented 4×4 athletes. I can’t recall the last time we had such strong contenders, and they will be competing in both men’s 4×4 and mixed relay,” remarked Fuseini.
He underscored the positive influence of government support on the team’s composition and competitiveness.
Fuseini attributed recent government aid for local competitions over the past three years as a significant contributor to improvements across various athletic disciplines.
Furthermore, he commended the government’s dedication to enhancing technical proficiency within the sport, highlighting the successful training of 110 technical officials who passed their exams.
According to Fuseini, this investment in technical assistance and officiating positions Ghana favorably in terms of organizational capacity and operational efficiency.
“With government backing, we have witnessed notable advancements in developing formidable relay teams, high jumpers, and sprinters,” affirmed the Federation president.
During the briefing, the Ministry of Youth and Sports unveiled athletic gear for Team Ghana participating in the 13th All African Games.
Additionally, the Ministry announced welfare packages for athletes based on their performance at the games, with gold medalists receiving $3,000, silver medalists earning $2,000, and bronze medalists rewarded with $1,000.
Furthermore, a per diem of GHS1,000 will be provided for approximately 500 Ghanaian athletes participating in the games.

The Ghana Football Association has provided clarification regarding the absence of Inaki Williams, Thomas Partey, and Joseph Paintsil from the Black Stars squad for upcoming international friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda in Morocco.
The exclusion of these players from Otto Addo’s recent squad has sparked public interest, prompting the FA to address the matter via social media.
According to the GFA, both Inaki and Partey requested to be excused from the squad to focus on their recovery from recent injuries. Meanwhile, Paintsil’s absence is attributed to administrative issues related to paperwork, hindering his ability to travel outside the US following his transfer to the MLS.
Ghana is scheduled to face AFCON 2023 finalists Nigeria on Friday, March 22, 2023, at 1pm, followed by a match against Uganda four days later, with both games set to take place in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports in Ghana has disclosed the reward packages designated for athletes who excel at the 2023 African Games in Accra.
According to the ministry, securing a gold medal will earn athletes a substantial prize of $3000, while silver medalists will receive $2000, and bronze medalists will be awarded $1000.
These details were unveiled during a press briefing held in Accra on Sunday evening, just before the commencement of the athletics segment of the games.
Additionally, athletes will receive a per diem of Ghs 1000 for each of the 14 days they spend in camp during the games.
Ghana has already amassed an impressive tally of 46 medals within the first 10 days of competition, comprising 9 gold, 22 silver, and 15 bronze.

Mustapha Ussif, the Sports Minister, has announced that Ghana is receiving widespread acclaim for its exceptional organization of the ongoing African Games.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday evening, Ussif highlighted the positive feedback received from international officials regarding the quality of the games.
“We’ve received applause from every international official we’ve engaged with, commending us for hosting such a spectacular event thus far. Let’s collectively embrace this and position Ghana as a premier sports destination,” he stated.
Encouraging a focus on the positives, Ussif urged the media to highlight the numerous successes of the games.
Ghana has secured four medals in the competition thus far, with Winnifred Ntumi clinching a gold and two silver medals in weightlifting, and Abeku Jackson securing a silver in swimming on Sunday. This achievement has propelled Ghana into the top 10 in the medal standings after seven days of competition.
However, despite these accomplishments, the games have encountered various challenges. Reports have emerged of athletes facing transportation issues, with badminton player Leslie Addo revealing that he and his teammates were transported to the competition on the back of a pickup truck. Additionally, a cyclist disclosed that he did not receive new equipment for competition after his bicycle broke down shortly after the race began.
Ghana has invested $195 million in infrastructure to host the games, with an additional $47 million allocated for operations during the competition, which will continue until March 23, 2024.
