Former Ghanaian midfielder, Anthony Annan, has raised accusations against the Black Stars team doctors, alleging that they lied to the public about an injury he sustained during a pre-AFCON friendly in 2013. Annan claims that the doctors falsely attributed the injury to his club, Osasuna, while he insists it occurred during a game against Egypt.
Speaking in an interview with Geomends Media, Annan clarified that, at the time, he was playing for Osasuna in Spain and was fit to join the national team’s camp for AFCON 2013. He recounted the friendly match against Egypt, where he sustained an ankle injury while captaining the team.
Initially thinking the injury wasn’t severe, Annan later discovered it was a cracked bone, preventing him from participating further in the tournament. Despite undergoing treatments, including injections and beach sand therapy, he couldn’t fully recover and was compelled to retire from international football.
Annan expressed frustration over the team doctors’ decision to fabricate details about his injury, attributing it to an old ailment. This false narrative, according to Annan, led to financial consequences, as his parent club, Schalke, refused to pay him for the second round of the season.
The former Ghanaian international, who scored two goals in 62 appearances for the national team, currently plays for DJK Arminia Lirich in Germany.

“World Karate President Espinos Shows Support for 13th African Games in Ghana”
Mr. Antonio Espinos, the President of the World Karate Federation (WKF), held a media briefing in Accra to announce his presence and express full support for the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 13th African Games. Commending the Ghana Karate Do Federation and the 26 participating countries, Espinos emphasized the significance of the African Games as a crucial international competition and anticipated outstanding performances.
While noting Karate’s aspiration for Olympic recognition, Espinos highlighted the numerous international championships available for athletes and expressed the goal of making Karate one of the premier sports globally.
Monsieur Souleymane Gaye, President of the African Karate Federation, revealed that 48 nations, with at least 250 athletes, would converge in Accra for the sports festival. He acknowledged the strength of nations like Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia while highlighting the emergence of rising countries like Senegal, South Africa, CĂ´te d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Ghana. Gaye emphasized the federation’s focus on sport development through regional championships and referee seminars.
Mr. Nathaniel Johnson, President of the Ghana Karate Do Federation, described the Accra 2023 African Games as historic and unique, uniting Africans through sports. The WKF conducted a technical meeting for the 13th African Games, attended by various executives.
Team Ghana, comprising 10 male athletes and one female, is eager to compete and win medals at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The African Games, hosting over 5000 athletes across 23 disciplines, will take place in Accra from March 4 to 23, 2024. The Karate competition is scheduled for March 7 to 9, featuring various categories and culminating in Male and Female Team Kumite on the final day.

Offiong Edem, a five-time gold medalist in the women’s singles at the African Games, clinched Nigeria’s inaugural medal at the ongoing 2023 African Games by earning a bronze in the women’s table tennis singles.
Edem, despite losing in Tuesday’s semi-final to Egypt’s Dina Meshref in four straight sets, expressed admiration for her opponent: “It was a quality contest, and I respect Dina Meshref. I have no regrets because I have been at the highest level for twenty years. I’ve got the medals too,” she shared with Joy Sports.
With this bronze at the Accra 2023 African Games, Edem’s overall medal tally for the African Games now stands at nine, including two bronze, two silver, and five gold medals.
