Former Youth and Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has revealed ambitious plans for a comprehensive revamp of Ghana’s sports landscape in 2025 under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
This commitment follows the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), with a noticeable decline in the state of football during Kurt Okraku’s tenure as the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of Ghanaian football, Nii Lante Vanderpuye criticized the government, citing a perceived lack of determination to scrutinize those involved in the sport.
“I know this particular government will not have the willpower to undertake this serious and drastic decision with regard to our football,” he stated in an interview with Citi Sports.
Vanderpuye outlined his vision for a significant transformation in the sports landscape in 2025, promising changes in the administration of football and the overall management of leagues in the country.
“We will change how our leagues are run in the country. I am not bragging, but for the little discussions we’ve had, on the way forward for our sports, I believe our manifesto will have a clear cut as to how to go with Ghana football,” he added.
Amidst these developments, the Black Stars currently face the challenge of securing a permanent head coach after the dismissal of Chris Hughton following Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. Four prominent European coaches have reportedly submitted their Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) for consideration in the search for a new head coach for the Black Stars, following the dismissal of Chris Hughton.
One of the early applicants is German strategist Jurgen Kohler, who engaged in discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) last Tuesday. Kohler diligently submitted his application to the five-member search committee well before the February 2 deadline.
Additionally, the vacant position has attracted interest from former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Robert Prosinecki, who, along with ex-Hamburg and German coach Felix Magath, has expressed a desire to lead the Black Stars. Prosinecki’s agent, Vukoja Josip, has officially confirmed the submission of his client’s application to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the pursuit of securing the coaching role.
Furthermore, reports indicate that former Black Stars coach Goran Stevanovic has thrown his hat in the ring once again, expressing interest in returning for a second stint. The Serbian-born coach has reportedly submitted the necessary documents to be considered for the role.
