With the final standings in Group A now determined, Nigeria awaits their last-16 opponent in the AFCON, which will be the runners-up from Group C. Group C includes strong contenders such as Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, and Gambia, who are yet to complete their group stage fixtures.
Presently, Senegal leads Group C with an impressive six points from two games, showcasing their dominance with a 3-0 victory over Gambia and a 3-1 triumph against Cameroon. The defending champions’ upcoming match against Guinea holds significant implications for the knockout stage draw.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah witnessed a thrilling conclusion to Egypt’s final Africa Cup of Nations group game on Monday evening, even though he was sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in the previous match against Ghana. Despite Salah’s absence, Egypt secured advancement to the knockout stages in a dramatic encounter against Cape Verde.
Salah, who was substituted in the midst of Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana, is set to return to Liverpool for treatment. The winger’s injury, described as “more serious than first thought” by his agent Ramy Abbas, raises concerns about his availability later in the tournament.
Before departing for England, Salah watched from the sidelines as Egypt faced group leaders Cape Verde, who had previously won their opening two matches. The Pharaohs, sitting in second place in Group B after two consecutive 2-2 draws, remarkably completed a trilogy of 2-2 results against Cape Verde.

Ghana faced a sense of déjà vu as their exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was all but confirmed with a late 2-2 draw against Mozambique in Abidjan, echoing a similar scenario against Comoros two years prior.
Jordan Ayew’s two penalty goals briefly elevated the Black Stars above Egypt in Group B, who were trailing behind Cape Verde in the simultaneous Group B match.
Much like their encounter with Comoros, Ghana once again allowed the underdog to stage a comeback, conceding stoppage-time goals to Geny Catamo’s penalty and Reinildo Mandava’s header. This, coupled with Egypt’s draw, almost certainly marked the end of Ghana’s journey in the tournament.
Under the guidance of Chris Hughton, the Black Stars took an early lead within the first quarter of an hour when Nanani fouled Joseph Paintsil, resulting in Ayew calmly converting the penalty.
Despite Mozambique’s status as one of the lower-ranked nations in AFCON, having never won a game in the tournament, Ghana struggled to assert dominance and spent prolonged periods as the second-best side in Abidjan.
The Mambas displayed slick play in the first half, lacking a direct threat on Richard Ofori’s goal. However, their fortunes changed after the break, with chances from Lau King and Bruno Langa testing the goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, Mozambique’s inability to convert chances came back to haunt them when Ghana, against the run of play, doubled their lead. Reinildo was penalized for blocking a close-range shot with a slightly outstretched arm, providing Ayew with the opportunity to secure his brace.
In a twist of fate, Ghana’s substitute Andre Ayew was later judged to have handled the ball in a similar incident, granting Geny Catamo the chance to bring his side back into the game as six minutes of stoppage time commenced.

This late implosion extended Ghana’s winless streak at the tournament to an unprecedented seven games, sparking national mourning and raising concerns about the future of the once-dominant team.
The outcome left the four-time AFCON winners with two points at the end of the group stage, a total that has traditionally not been sufficient for teams to qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Despite Jordan Ayew’s composed penalty finishes in the 15th and 66th minutes, Mozambique, relentless in their pursuit of an equalizer, exploited Ghana’s defensive vulnerabilities. Catamo converted a penalty in the 90th minute after Andre Ayew’s unfortunate handball, and in the fourth minute of added time, Mandava, who was involved in the second penalty, rose highest to head home a corner past Ofori, igniting celebrations for the Mambas and despair for the Black Stars.
Ghana’s early dominance, marked by the first shot within a minute, became a distant memory as Mozambique increased the pressure in the second half. Two missed opportunities by Lau King and a ten-minute period of Mozambican possession led to yellow cards for both Andre Ayew and Iddrisu in the second half.
Hughton’s defensive substitutions, aimed at securing the lead, tragically backfired, leaving Ghana exposed and outnumbered in the final moments. Geny Catamo successfully sent Ofori the wrong way in the 90th minute after the ball struck Andre Ayew’s arm.
In the fourth minute of six minutes of added time, with the ball bouncing out of play off a Mozambique player, goalkeeper Richard Ofori made contact with it. From the resulting corner, Reinildo headed it into the corner past Ofori, condemning Ghana to a second consecutive group stage exit at the AFCON.
