The Accra Sports Stadium tennis court is abuzz with excitement as the 2024 edition of the West African Inter-Recruit Tennis tournament officially began on January 8 and will run until January 12. Ghana, Benin, and Togo are the three participating countries, each vying for the prestigious title.
The stakes are high in this second edition, with the winner of the tournament not only securing the glory but also walking away with a substantial prize of $300 and a valuable college scholarship for education abroad. The runner-up will receive $200, while the third-place finisher will take home a cash prize of $150.
Gabriel Amoako, the tournament director, emphasized the unique opportunities this event provides, stating, “It’s not about winning the tournament, it’s about participating in the tournament.” He highlighted the significant impact on players’ futures, explaining that the CEO, Sadia Mayo, facilitates connections with coaches in the USA, opening doors for admission into colleges. Amoako also revealed that last year’s winner received financial support for SAT registration.
Speaking on the choice of Ghana as the host country, Amoako expressed pride, stating, “Sadia chose Ghana because we have a good conducive environment to host tournaments. “Ethiopia’s Tigist Ketema Sets New World Record in Marathon Debut at Dubai Race”
Tigist Ketema, a 25-year-old Ethiopian athlete, made a remarkable debut at the Dubai Marathon on Sunday, breaking the world record for the fastest marathon debut in the women’s race. She completed the race in an impressive time of 2:16:07, securing both victory and the eighth spot in the list of fastest women marathoners in history. This achievement also shattered the Dubai Marathon’s course record by one minute and one second.
Previously, the women’s record belonged to Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, who set the bar at 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 49 seconds during her debut at the Valencia Marathon on December 4th, 2022.
