Kenyan Bernard Cheriyout Sang Wins 2024 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon in Accra
The 2024 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon, held on Saturday, September 7, was a resounding success, attracting over 10,000 participants. Mr. Ernest Buamah of the Millennium Marathon Company highlighted the significant increase in foreign runners, noting that the race is ranked on the World Athletics calendar. He expressed optimism about achieving Label Status in the future, which would further elevate the event.
Kenyan runner Bernard Cheriyout Sang claimed victory in the Male Category of the Half Marathon, finishing with a time of 1:04:42:14. Fellow Kenyans Joseph Kiprono and Moses Bokien followed closely in second and third places, respectively.
In the Women’s category, Clementina Chelangt won with a time of 1:13:22:27, while Cheptoeck Careen secured second place. Ghana’s Sakat Juliana Lariba of the Armed Forces took third with a time of 1:16:12:40.
The event featured two main races—a 5km fun run and a competitive 21km race—drawing participants from schools and African countries like Togo, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The top 25 runners were awarded prizes for their efforts, and custom-branded medals and wristbands were distributed to commemorate the occasion.
The event also included live music, food stalls, and interactive games, creating a lively atmosphere at Independence Square. The KGL Foundation, title sponsor of the marathon, emphasized its commitment to promoting health and well-being through sports, aligning with its broader mission to uplift Ghanaian communities.
Mr. Nii Annorbah-Sarpei, Programmes Manager of the KGL Foundation, presented the ultimate prize to the 21km winner, reaffirming the foundation’s dedication to fostering healthy initiatives and sporting events across Ghana.
