Lopetegui Urges Mohammed Kudus to Improve Defensive Work Rate at West Ham
West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui has called on Mohammed Kudus to enhance his defensive contributions as the Ghanaian midfielder continues to find his rhythm in the Premier League.
Kudus, who dazzled with his performances last season, has struggled to replicate that form in the ongoing campaign, though he has managed to net three goals so far.
Following West Ham’s narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton on Thursday, Lopetegui highlighted the importance of off-the-ball work for the team’s attacking players, including Kudus.
“I think any attacking player is much better if his focus is on his defensive work,” Lopetegui remarked. “When you focus defensively, your attacking performance usually improves because football is a collective game.”
The manager also acknowledged the challenges Kudus has faced after missing five matches earlier this season, which disrupted his momentum in the demanding Premier League.
“We are happy with him, but he needs to understand that football is a team sport. Each player must contribute their best for the collective success. Kudus is adapting well and helping the team, and I believe that when he fully integrates, we will see even more from him,” Lopetegui added.
Kudus will aim to continue improving and making an impact when West Ham host Liverpool on Sunday at the London Stadium.
