Abiama Breaks His Duck in Style as 1860 Munich Crush Energie Cottbus
Dickson Abiama finally ended his goal drought in spectacular fashion, helping 1860 Munich to a resounding 5-1 victory over high-flying Energie Cottbus in the German 3. Liga on Saturday.
The Nigerian forward, on loan from Kaiserslautern, had been under pressure after failing to score in his first eight appearances for the Lions. But the 26-year-old delivered when it mattered most, opening the scoring in the 15th minute with a clinical right-footed finish into the roof of the net. The goal came after a smart assist from Julian Guttau and set the stage for a dominant display at the Stadion an der Grünwalder Straße.
Abiama’s breakthrough seemed to lift a weight off his shoulders—and lifted his team as well. Tunay Deniz doubled the lead before Patrick Hobsch took over with a brilliant brace. Although Timmy Thiele pulled one back for Cottbus, an own goal from Joshua Putze sealed a comprehensive win for the hosts.
The result marked Abiama’s first goal for 1860 Munich and the 36th of his professional career—adding to previous tallies with Greuther Fürth, SC Eltersdorf, and other German lower-tier sides. Known for his Bundesliga experience, Abiama is hoping to reignite his career and earn a look-in from Nigeria’s Super Eagles selectors.
This was Energie Cottbus’ heaviest loss of the season, a significant blow to their promotion hopes as they fell four points behind league leaders Dynamo Dresden. In contrast, 1860 Munich’s win moved them six points clear of the relegation zone, offering a much-needed confidence boost heading into their next fixture against Sandhausen on April 9.
Abiama will now aim to build on this momentum and help steer the Lions to safety.
