With just days to go before Cameroon’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal against DR Congo in Rabat, Morocco, the Indomitable Lions find themselves battling off the pitch instead of preparing for battle on it.

A tense standoff has erupted between head coach Marc Brys and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), throwing the team’s preparations into chaos. The dispute — centered around the formal announcement of the national squad — has snowballed into a full-blown power struggle that threatens to derail the nation’s World Cup ambitions.

Brys, who took over the reins in April 2024 amid controversy, is already in Morocco overseeing logistical preparations for the high-stakes playoff tournament, which also features Nigeria versus Gabon in the other semifinal. The Belgian tactician has refused to travel over 1,000 kilometers back to Yaoundé for a ceremonial press conference, insisting that time would be better spent fine-tuning the team on-site.

Instead, he has proposed unveiling the 26-man roster via video conference, calling it a “practical and modern approach.” However, FECAFOOT, led by Samuel Eto’o, is standing firm — no physical presence in Yaoundé means no official squad announcement or submission to FIFA and CAF.

As the clock ticks toward November 13, uncertainty clouds Cameroon’s camp. What should have been a moment of unity ahead of a defining match has instead exposed deep cracks within the nation’s football leadership.
