Senegal Cruises to 3-0 AFCON Victory Over Gambia; Cameroon Stumbles Against Guinea

In a dominant start to their Africa Cup of Nations title defense, Senegal secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Gambia in Yamoussoukro. Two goals from Lamine Camara, complemented by an early strike from Pape Gueye, set Senegal apart from fellow contenders Egypt, Nigeria, and Cameroon, who faced setbacks in their opening matches.

Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye wasted no time, putting the 2021 champions ahead just four minutes into the game. Sadio Mane’s assist allowed Gueye to smash the ball into the bottom corner. The momentum continued for Senegal after Gambia’s Ebou Adams received a red card for fouling Camara in first-half stoppage time.

Taking full advantage of the numerical superiority, Senegal extended their lead with Camara’s second goal, expertly assisted by Ismaila Sarr. Camara completed his brace in the 86th minute, skillfully bending the ball into the top right-hand corner from 25 yards out, securing a comprehensive victory for the Teranga Lions.

Sadio Mane emphasized the importance of taking the tournament game by game, stating, “It’s too early to speak about the trophy.”

In the same group and venue, Cameroon faced Guinea and initially fell behind when Mohamed Bayo capitalized on confused defending. Guinea’s captain, Francois Kaman, was sent off just before halftime for a foul on Frank Magri. Despite Magri’s equalizing header early in the second half, Cameroon was unable to push for victory.

Cameroon faced additional challenges as Fabrice Ondoa replaced goalkeeper Andre Onana, who experienced travel delays due to adverse weather conditions after playing for Manchester United on Sunday. The match unfolded with unexpected twists, setting the stage for an intriguing AFCON tournament.
