When the call finally came, it was a moment Tolu Arokodare and Igho Ogbu had long dreamed of. The two Nigerian stars, who have been making waves in European football, now have a golden opportunity to prove themselves on the international stage.
Earlier this week, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 39-man provisional squad ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The list includes a mix of seasoned internationals and eight new invitees, with Arokodare and Ogbu among them.
For former Nigeria U17 coach Manu Garba, the inclusion of these two players is no surprise. Having played a role in their early development, Garba believes both men have what it takes to impress Chelle and cement a place in the national team.
“This is a good opportunity for both Igho Ogbu and Tolu Arokodare to contribute to the success of the Super Eagles in qualifying for the World Cup and winning the AFCON,” Garba told NationSports.
A Season to Remember
Arokodare, 24, has been on fire for Belgian club Genk, scoring 18 goals and providing five assists in 33 appearances. His goal-scoring prowess has made him a key player in Genk’s title challenge, and many are eager to see if he can replicate that form for Nigeria.
Ogbu, meanwhile, has been a rock at the back for Slavia Prague. The 24-year-old defender played 41 matches last season and has already featured in 27 games this campaign, proving to be a crucial figure for the Czech giants.
With Nigeria set to face Rwanda in Kigali on March 21 and Zimbabwe in Uyo on March 25, the Super Eagles need all the firepower and defensive solidity they can get. Chelle is expected to trim his squad to 23 players before the games, making the upcoming training sessions a decisive test for newcomers like Arokodare and Ogbu.
Will these rising stars seize the moment and earn a permanent place in the Super Eagles setup? All eyes will be on them as Nigeria prepares for two must-win games.
