Ghanaian defender Jonas Adjei Adjetey has celebrated a major career milestone after helping FC Basel secure the 2024/25 Swiss Super League title. The Black Stars center-back played the full 90 minutes as Basel produced a commanding 5-2 win over Lugano in the championship play-offs on Saturday.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with Lugano taking a shock lead just two minutes in through Uran Bislimi. However, Basel hit back almost immediately, with Albian Ajeti equalizing in the 4th minute before receiving a red card later in the first half.
Despite going down to ten men, Basel surged ahead thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri—once of Liverpool and Stoke City—and a goal from French midfielder Leo Leroy. Anto Grgic pulled one back late for Lugano, but the result was beyond doubt.
Though the win wasn’t enough to clinch the title on the day, Basel’s coronation came 24 hours later when second-placed Servette drew 1-1 with Young Boys. With three games to spare, Basel were mathematically crowned champions of the 2024/25 season.
Adjetey’s rock-solid performances throughout the campaign have reportedly caught the attention of La Liga side Real Betis. Should he remain at Basel, the young defender is set to feature in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
