A new chapter begins at San Mamés as Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams has been appointed the new captain of Athletic Bilbao, succeeding the long-serving Oscar De Marcos.
De Marcos, a club icon, officially called time on his illustrious 16-year career after Athletic’s 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on the final day of the 2024/25 La Liga season. The 36-year-old, who amassed 572 first-team appearances, handed over the captain’s armband to Williams in a symbolic gesture, marking the start of a new leadership era at the Basque club.
Inaki Williams, now 30, has been a loyal servant to Athletic Bilbao since making his debut in 2015. Known for his blistering pace and tireless work rate, the Ghana international has carved out a reputation as one of La Liga’s most consistent forwards. He has featured in 471 matches, scoring 111 goals and assisting 64 more.
In the 2024/25 campaign, Williams once again proved his importance, notching 11 goals and 9 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. As the newly appointed captain, he is expected to lead the club into both domestic battles and their highly anticipated return to the UEFA Champions League.
Williams’ promotion to captain is not only a testament to his on-field contributions but also to his leadership and dedication to the club’s values. His journey from a young debutant to a seasoned leader reflects the spirit of Athletic Bilbao—a club steeped in tradition, loyalty, and identity.
