Jerry Afriyie Returns to Boost Black Satellites Ahead of U20 AFCON Quarter-Final Showdown with Egypt

Ghanaian young star Jerry Afriyie has made a timely return to the Black Satellites camp in Egypt just in time for their crucial quarter-final clash against tournament hosts Egypt at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Afriyie, who had temporarily left the national team camp to fulfil club commitments with Spanish side CD Lugo, is back and ready for action. The striker flew to Spain on May 6 after impressing in Ghana’s first two group stage games and played a vital role for Lugo on Saturday, scoring and assisting in a key match against Gimnastic.

His brief departure was part of a pre-tournament agreement between the Ghana Football Association and CD Lugo, allowing the forward to honour club obligations before rejoining the national team.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed his return in a statement on Sunday, May 11, noting that Afriyie is now fully available for selection as Ghana prepares to face Egypt in a high-stakes quarter-final encounter.

Afriyie’s comeback is seen as a significant boost to coach Desmond Ofei’s squad, adding attacking depth and experience as they aim to advance further in the competition.

The much-anticipated clash is set for Monday, May 12, at the Suez Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3 PM local time.
