As anticipation builds for the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren is urging caution while igniting belief in his team’s potential.
Returning to the continental showpiece for the first time since 2018, Ghana will be aiming to shake off past disappointments and make a bold statement. The Black Queens, three-time finalists, are still in pursuit of their maiden WAFCON title—something Bjorkegren acknowledges as a major motivator.
“We are not one of the favourites. Ghana hasn’t won this title, and the last time we reached the final was back in 2006,” Bjorkegren told CAF Online. “But we can be a strong underdog. On our day, if we follow the game plan, we’re capable of beating any team.”
Bjorkegren, who took over as head coach earlier this year, emphasized that while the team’s raw talent is undeniable, there’s still plenty of work ahead as the July 5 kick-off date approaches.
“Tactically, we need to be more organized. Fitness-wise, there’s room for improvement. Most of our players need more experience at the top level, ideally in stronger leagues,” he explained. “Despite limited sessions so far, I see progress every camp.”
Ghana face a challenging Group C draw, which pits them against defending champions South Africa, as well as Tanzania and Mali. Still, the Swede is quietly confident that the Queens can rise to the occasion.
With Ghana’s return to Africa’s premier women’s tournament just weeks away, fans will be watching closely to see if the underdogs can bite back.
