In the heart of Ajegunle, Lagos—on the same dusty pitches where dreams were born and nurtured—Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi led a heartwarming initiative to give back to the community that shaped his journey.

The annual event, “Maracana Children’s Fest with Ndidi and Friends”, held in partnership with the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, brought together a host of Nigerian football stars and hundreds of excited fans. It was more than a football gathering—it was a celebration of hope, inspiration, and homecoming.

Ndidi was joined by national teammates including Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Tolu Arokodare, Frank Onyeka, William Troost-Ekong and his brother, as well as Raphael Onyedika. These stars—many of whom also rose from humble beginnings—were welcomed with thunderous cheers from the community.

The iconic Maracana pitch in Ajegunle, where Ndidi himself once chased the ball with childhood dreams, served as the vibrant setting. Children participated in lively football matches while the professionals stood pitchside, smiling, cheering, and occasionally joining in. Each child left not just with gifts, but with memories and photographs alongside their heroes.

Reflecting on the impact of the event, Ndidi shared his motivation:

> “I’m excited about this project. The smiles on the faces of the children amaze me,” he told Punch. “As a child, seeing the stars you only watch on TV—it’s a different feeling. That’s why we invited our colleagues to be part of this.”

The initiative is part of a growing wave of philanthropy among Super Eagles players. Alongside Ndidi, the likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Sadiq Umar, and Akor Adams have also been actively involved in community upliftment projects across Nigeria.
