From Southampton struggles to Turkish redemption – A striker’s journey comes full circle

After months of speculation and behind-the-scenes negotiations, Southampton have officially confirmed the departure of Nigerian international Paul Onuachu, who rejoins Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor on a permanent deal.

Onuachu etched his name into Nigerian football history books by scoring the fastest-ever goal for the Super Eagles—finding the net just ten seconds into his full international debut against Egypt on March 22, 2019.

The 31-year-old forward made a high-profile switch to Southampton from Belgian side Genk during the 2023 winter transfer window, in a deal reportedly worth €18 million. However, his time in England failed to spark, as he struggled to find his footing in the Premier League. He scored just four goals in 25 appearances, unable to prevent Southampton’s relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.

In search of a fresh start, Onuachu moved on loan to Trabzonspor in September 2023, and the results were immediate. He rediscovered his goal-scoring touch, netting 17 goals and registering four assists in 25 matches, becoming a fan favorite and a vital asset for the Turkish giants.

Despite being part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished runners-up to Ivory Coast, Onuachu was an unused substitute in the final.

The move to Trabzonspor reunites him with fellow Nigerian forward Anthony Nwakaeme, a former Super Eagles invitee in 2017.

Onuachu leaves England with unfinished business, but with a point to prove once more in Turkey, he’ll be hoping to build on his renaissance in front of goal.
