Rasheedat Ajibade Rallies Nigerians as Super Falcons Eye 10th WAFCON Crown

“Support us, pray for us – we’ll make you proud,” says Nigeria captain ahead of 2024 showdown

As the countdown begins for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerian fans, urging them to rally behind the team as they chase a record-extending 10th continental title.

In an exclusive chat with Olori Sports, the Atlético de Madrid forward, who recently wrapped up the season in Spain with seven goals and two assists in 22 matches, emphasized the need for unity between the team and supporters as the tournament kicks off on July 5th in Morocco.

> “We expect support from the people, just as they expect us to win. We want them to support us and pray for us as much as they can so we can win this tournament,” Ajibade said.

The 25-year-old, who is expected to part ways with Atlético next month, is fully locked in on Nigeria’s campaign. The Super Falcons begin their quest with a Group A opener against Tunisia on July 6th, before facing Botswana and Algeria in what promises to be a fiery battle for the knockout rounds.

Ajibade, who succeeded Onome Ebi as team captain, reflected on the challenges and expectations that come with leading Africa’s most successful women’s team.

> “It’s never easy leading people, especially a women’s team — we all know what that’s like. But patience and being a good listener are essential,” she shared.

“You must also be a good example — show your teammates the character and discipline you want them to emulate.”

With Nigeria eager to reclaim their crown from rivals South Africa, who dethroned them in 2022, Ajibade’s leadership and the unyielding spirit of the Super Falcons could prove vital on the road to glory.
