Black Queens Roar Into WAFCON Quarterfinals, Set Up Crunch Clash With Algeria

Ghana’s Black Queens are through to the quarterfinals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), setting up an exciting showdown against Algeria after a statement 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their final Group C match.

It was a rollercoaster group stage for Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side, who bounced back from a difficult start. The Queens opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa, followed by a gritty 1-1 draw against Mali. But it was their final group game that stole the headlines, as they dismantled Tanzania in style.

The fireworks began early at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane, with veteran forward Princella Adubea pouncing on a goalkeeping error to open the scoring in the 12th minute. Although Tanzania clawed back with an equalizer in the 40th minute, the Black Queens didn’t flinch. Alice Kusi calmly converted a penalty to restore the lead before the break.

In the second half, Ghana turned on the style. Evelyn Badu added a third with a classy finish, before Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah capped off the performance with a thunderous strike to seal the 4-1 triumph.

Finishing second in Group C with four points, the Black Queens now turn their attention to Saturday, July 19, when they battle Algeria for a place in the semifinals.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, who delivered a brilliant performance, couldn’t hide her joy after the match.
“I’m so proud of the girls,” she beamed. “We all fought hard, had each other’s backs, and showed what Ghana is made of. As one of the vocal leaders, I always push the team, but today we all stepped up together.”

With momentum on their side, Ghana’s Black Queens are dreaming big, with Algeria the next hurdle in their quest for WAFCON glory.
