As the Black Queens prepare to return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) stage, debutant goalkeeper Cynthia Findiib has assured fans that the team is embracing the challenge with confidence, not pressure.
Ghana kicks off their Group C campaign on Monday in Oudja with a mouthwatering clash against reigning champions South Africa. It’s a high-stakes opener for the Queens, who are eager to make a strong comeback after missing the last tournament in 2022.
Despite the big stage and weight of expectations, Findiib insists the team is mentally grounded. “There’s no pressure on us,” she said. “Even though at times you feel it, as professionals we learn to manage it and stay focused.”
This tournament marks Findiib’s first major appearance for the national team, and she believes the squad’s blend of seasoned veterans and ambitious newcomers gives them an edge. “We’re here to showcase ourselves. It’s a massive opportunity we don’t take for granted,” she added.
Coach Kim Björkegren’s side has been building momentum in recent fixtures and heads into the tournament with belief. Facing South Africa will be a stern test, but Findiib remains optimistic: “It’s 50-50. Any team can win. We respect South Africa, but we’re prepared.”
The Black Queens will also go up against Mali and Tanzania in Group C, as they aim to finally clinch their first continental crown after three previous runner-up finishes.
