“Kwasi Sibo Blames Individualism for Black Stars’ AFCON 2025 Woes”

Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has offered a candid reflection on the Black Stars’ shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), blaming the team’s lack of cohesion and excessive individualism for the disappointment.

The Real Oviedo man, speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, expressed dismay at the disjointed performances that saw Ghana finish bottom of their AFCON qualifying group—a result that ends their two-decade-long streak of consecutive tournament appearances.

“I watched the qualifiers, and what I realised was that there was too much individuality,” Sibo said. “Unlike the World Cup qualifiers, where you can now see the bond and love among the players, we did not see that during the AFCON qualifiers.”

Ghana’s 2024 campaign was marred by three draws and three losses across six games, a far cry from the unity and purpose displayed during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they secured back-to-back wins over Chad and Madagascar.

The resurgence continued in London, where the Black Stars finished third at the 2025 Unity Cup, a mini-tournament that featured several African powerhouses.

With another round of World Cup qualifiers set for September—featuring ties against Chad and Mali—Sibo believes the team must prioritize unity to avoid repeating past mistakes.

“Togetherness is what makes the difference,” he concluded, urging the team to build on the recent signs of improvement.
