Island nation Madagascar booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday evening. The result ensured they advanced alongside co-hosts Tanzania, who topped Group B.
Midfielder Fenohasina Razafimaro gave Madagascar a dream start with a seventh-minute strike, but Burkina Faso hit back through Souleymane Sangare of Sporting Cascades in the 25th minute. The match remained finely poised at halftime before Cliver Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa of CFFA converted from the penalty spot on the hour mark to seal victory for the Islanders.
With the result, Madagascar finished the group stage with 7 points, edging out Mauritania on goal difference to clinch second place.
Meanwhile, Tanzania maintained their unbeaten record with a goalless draw against the Central African Republic. The Taifa Stars ended the group phase on 10 points, securing top spot and strengthening their ambitions on home soil.
Action now shifts to Group A in Nairobi on Sunday, 17th August 2025, where DR Congo face Morocco at the Nyayo National Stadium, while Zambia take on co-hosts Kenya at the Moi International Sports Centre.
