Mikel Obi Sparks Debate: “Kroos is Average, Trophies Don’t Define the Best Players”

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has stirred controversy with bold claims about Real Madrid legends.

Speaking on comparisons in world football, Mikel insisted that German midfielder Toni Kroos is “an average player” and suggested that his own qualities were superior during his playing days. According to Mikel, the major difference was visibility: “The only reason people rate Kroos above me is because he played for Real Madrid. We need to stop this mentality that every Real Madrid player is automatically better.”

Mikel went further, questioning the value of collective success as a measure of individual greatness. He pointed out that several Real Madrid stars, including Kroos, Nacho, Dani Carvajal, and Luka Modrić, boast five UEFA Champions League titles yet, in his opinion, “are not even close to being the best in their positions.”

“Trophies can be misleading,” Mikel argued. “I can name at least ten players in those same roles who were better but didn’t have the chance to win five Champions Leagues.”

His comments have sparked heated debate among fans, with some backing his perspective on football narratives, while others strongly disagree, pointing to the influence and longevity of Madrid’s golden generation.
