President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians both at home and across the diaspora to unite in support of the national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at the International Statesperson Award ceremony hosted by the World Affairs Council in Philadelphia on Friday, March 27, 2026, he highlighted Ghana’s qualification and the importance of fan support during the tournament.
Mahama noted that Ghana will play matches in Canada and conclude their group stage campaign in the United States against Croatia. While acknowledging the challenges supporters may face—such as stricter immigration policies and visa restrictions—he expressed confidence in the Ghanaian community abroad.
He emphasized that Ghanaians in the United States would play a key role in backing the team, calling on them to show up in large numbers to cheer the Black Stars to victory.
Drawing on historical ties between Ghana and Pennsylvania, particularly through institutions like Lincoln University, Mahama also believes local American support—especially from Philadelphians—could boost the team’s morale.
Highlighting football’s global impact, he described the sport as a powerful tool for promoting Ghana’s image internationally.
He added that the government continues to invest in football development and recently organized a major fundraiser to support the national team.
Ghana is set to face England, Panama, and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group stage at the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
