A New Era Dawns: FIFA Expands Women’s World Cup to 48 Teams from 2031

In a groundbreaking decision aimed at transforming the landscape of women’s football, FIFA has announced that the Women’s World Cup will expand from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2031. This bold move follows thorough consultation with confederations and key stakeholders, and it marks a significant milestone in the tournament’s evolution since its modest beginnings in 1991 with just 12 teams.

The new format will mirror the men’s World Cup structure, which is also set to feature 48 teams starting in 2026. With 12 groups of four teams each, the 2031 Women’s World Cup will see an increase in matches from 64 to 104, extending the tournament by a week and offering more opportunities for global participation and visibility.

The 2023 edition of the tournament, hosted across Australia and New Zealand, set new standards of competitiveness and diversity. Teams from all six continental federations not only participated but also made a strong impact—each won at least one game, and five advanced to the knockout stages.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the success of 2023 and emphasized the strategic importance of the upcoming expansion. “This is not just about adding 16 more teams,” he said. “It’s about giving more countries the chance to develop their women’s football programs and inspire the next generation.”

In addition to the tournament expansion, the FIFA Council has approved a new initiative to support Afghan women’s football. The FIFA Strategy for Action for Afghan Women includes the creation of the Afghan Women’s Refugee Team (AWRT), which will be supported and managed by FIFA to begin operations as soon as possible.

“This is a landmark initiative,” Infantino added. “FIFA is committed to giving every girl the opportunity to play football.”

As the world’s most prestigious women’s football competition prepares for its next chapter, FIFA’s decisions reflect a firm commitment to inclusivity, development, and global growth.
