“Cranes Clipped: Algeria Stun Hosts Uganda in CHAN 2024 Opener”

The atmosphere was electric. A packed Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala buzzed with hope, passion, and patriotic chants as Uganda’s Cranes took to the field for their CHAN 2024 opener. This was more than just a game—it was a statement of intent on home soil. But what began as a night of promise ended in a humbling reality check.

After a few encouraging spells in the early minutes, Uganda’s rhythm unravelled under the pressure of a tactically superior Algerian side. Ayoub Ghezala’s well-timed header in the 36th minute turned the stadium into a silence chamber, punctuated only by the cheers of Algeria’s bench.

The Cranes tried to rally in the second half, with Joel Sserunjogi and Gavin Kizito showing sparks of determination. But their efforts ran into a brick wall of Algerian discipline. As fatigue set in, Abderrahmane Meziane and Soufiane Bayazid took advantage, striking twice in quick succession to seal a dominant 3-0 win for the North Africans.

For Uganda, the dream of finally breaking their CHAN knockout curse took a big blow. For Algeria, it was a statement victory—a masterclass in control, composure, and clinical finishing.
