Onana Leaves Old Trafford for Turkey in Search of Revival

Cameroon international goalkeeper Andre Onana has sealed a season-long loan move to Trabzonspor from Manchester United, bringing a new chapter to a turbulent spell at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old completed the deal before the closure of the Turkish transfer window on Friday, pending international clearance and registration.

Onana, who joined United in July 2023 for £47.2 million from Inter Milan under former boss Erik ten Hag, made 102 appearances for the Red Devils and lifted the 2024 FA Cup. However, his time in Manchester was overshadowed by inconsistency and costly errors that drew heavy scrutiny.

This season under new manager Ruben Amorim, Onana has found himself out of favour, failing to feature in United’s opening three Premier League matches. His only outing came in the shock Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town.

The arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day further pushed Onana down the pecking order, with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton also in contention for the No.1 spot.

United confirmed his departure with a short message: “We would like to wish Andre good luck.”

For Onana, this move to Turkey represents more than just game time—it is a chance to reset his career and rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after keepers.
