Senegal Appeals to CAS After AFCON Title Stripped by CAF

Senegal national football team have formally lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport following CAF’s controversial decision to overturn their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations victory against Morocco national football team.

Last week, a CAF appeal board annulled Senegal’s 1-0 win in the final and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, citing a brief walkout by Senegalese players in protest of a stoppage-time penalty awarded to the hosts. After returning to the pitch, Senegal went on to win in extra time, but the CAF board ruled the walkout constituted a forfeiture.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has requested CAS to annul the CAF ruling, officially recognise Senegal as the tournament winners, and suspend the appeal submission deadlines until the CAF decision is fully communicated with detailed reasoning.

CAS confirmed that an arbitral panel will be appointed to examine the case. However, due to procedural requirements and the need for both sides to present legal arguments, the timeline for a final decision remains uncertain.

CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb assured stakeholders that the tribunal is well-equipped to handle such disputes with independent expert arbitrators and that proceedings will be conducted as efficiently as possible, while ensuring all parties receive a fair hearing.
