New Dawn for Super Eagles: Eric Chelle Unveils Eight Fresh Faces for Unity Cup Clash in England

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to embrace a fresh chapter under head coach Eric Chelle, who has named eight uncapped players in his squad ahead of the much-anticipated Unity Cup in England.

Returning after nearly two decades, the Unity Cup kicks off on May 27, 2025, with a Caribbean showdown between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. But all eyes will be on the high-stakes West African derby the next day, as Nigeria squares off against eternal rivals Ghana at the Gtech Community Stadium.

With star forwards Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen missing from the lineup, Chelle has opted for a new direction—ushering in a wave of young and relatively unknown talents determined to make their mark on the international stage.

The debutants include Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, Saviour Isaac, and Collins Chinemerem—all from Enugu Rangers, alongside Junior Nduka and Sakiru Alimi of Remo Stars. Also called up are Ojetoye Waliu (Ikorodu City FC), Christantus Uche (Getafe FC), and Adamu Abubakar (Wikki Tourists).

These players represent a bold move by Chelle, who appears to be eyeing long-term depth and a generational shift in the Super Eagles setup. Their performances at the Unity Cup could determine future selections as Nigeria prepares for bigger challenges ahead.

The final of the tournament is scheduled for May 31, with the winners of both semifinals battling for continental pride.

Samuel Eto’o: The King of Consecutive Trebles

On this day, 15 years ago, history was made by one of Africa’s greatest footballers. Samuel Eto’o, the indomitable Cameroonian striker, etched his name into football folklore by achieving what no other player had done before — winning the treble with two different clubs in back-to-back seasons.

In 2009, he was a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s legendary Barcelona side that swept La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League. The very next season, in 2010, Eto’o moved to Inter Milan, where under the guidance of José Mourinho, he repeated the incredible feat by conquering Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League once again.

A masterclass in consistency, leadership, and clutch performances — Eto’o didn’t just win; he dominated two of Europe’s biggest stages in the span of two unforgettable years.
