Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has called for focus and vigilance despite his team’s strong position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Desert Foxes strengthened their hold on Group G with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Mozambique on Tuesday night at the Stade Hocine Aït Ahmed. The dominant performance extended their lead to three points at the top of the table, but Mahrez remains cautious.
“We started the match well, created several scoring opportunities, controlled the ball well, and put a lot of pressure on our opponents. However, we cannot say that we played a perfect match, it was just good,” Mahrez remarked after the game.
Despite the resounding win, the former Manchester City star emphasized that their journey to the World Cup is far from over.
“We are very happy with this victory, but we have not yet secured qualification. We still have four matches to go, and we must focus on winning them to secure a place in the World Cup,” he added.
Mozambique, Algeria’s closest challengers in the group, remain within striking distance. Mahrez acknowledged the stiff competition and the challenges that come with African qualifiers.
“The Mozambique national team achieved positive results and remained close to us in the standings. Now we have to maintain the points difference. We know that matches in Africa are not easy, but we have to prove ourselves,” he noted.

Norwegian football powerhouse Molde FK has secured the services of Ghanaian striker Jalal Abdullai from Swedish club IF Elfsborg on a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent, according to Sportsblog247.com.
At just 20 years old, Abdullai is already turning heads in European football. His standout performance against Molde during last season’s UEFA Europa League qualifiers left a lasting impression, prompting the club to bring him on board. For the young forward, the opportunity to join Molde is a dream come true.
“When my agent told me I was being sent on loan to Molde, my first thought was: Wow! I was thrilled! When I faced Molde in the qualifiers, I thought they were great,” Abdullai shared with excitement.

In a heartfelt tribute, Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has named the late Christian Atsu as the best player he has ever shared the pitch with. Despite playing alongside Ghanaian legends like Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, and his brother Andre Ayew, Jordan’s admiration for Atsu remains unmatched.
“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu],” Ayew revealed in an interview with Sportsblog247.com. “I played with Muntari and Essien. Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field.”
