Accra, Ghana — The 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup-winning Black Satellites are set to receive their long-awaited investment cheques, 15 years after their historic triumph. The SAS Finance Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has announced that the maturity date for the investment has been reached.
In 2009, following Ghana’s unprecedented U-20 World Cup victory in Egypt, GHc210,000 was invested on behalf of the 21 players by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Each player received an initial deposit of GHc10,000, which has now matured. Beginning January 8, 2025, players can visit the SAS office on the 14th floor of the World Trade Centre on Independence Avenue, Accra, to collect their cheques.
Process for Collection
To claim their funds, players are required to present a valid Ghana Card as identification. Those unable to appear in person can authorize a representative to collect on their behalf by presenting a notarized Power of Attorney.
Beyond the financial investment, the players were also provided annual insurance coverage to assist with life and health-related expenses, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to their well-being beyond the field.
A Victory Etched in History
The Black Satellites’ 2009 victory remains a golden chapter in Ghanaian football. Led by Andre Ayew, the team etched their names into history by defeating Brazil in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw in extra time. Ghana became the first African nation to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup, earning global admiration.

The Bulgaria-based striker, who plays for Ludogorets Razgrad, presented an array of essential items to the children at the orphanage. The donation included footballs, clothes, books, toiletries, and other necessities. Tekpetey was joined by a group of French entrepreneurs who contributed to the effort, creating a memorable day for the children.

Atsu, who tragically passed away on February 6, 2023, during a devastating earthquake in Turkey, left behind a legacy that transcends the football pitch.
Chelsea and Newcastle United, two clubs deeply connected to Atsu’s career, led the tributes. Chelsea shared: “Today we remember Christian Atsu on his birthday,” honoring the winger who, despite not making a competitive appearance for the Blues, remained a cherished part of the club’s history.
