John Laryea Draws Inspiration from Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford to Achieve Boxing Greatness

John Abaja Laryea, known as the “Expensive Boxer” and current WBO Africa Featherweight Champion, recently shared his admiration for American boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford. Before heading to Orlando, Laryea revealed in an exclusive interview that he often watches and learns from these undefeated icons, whose careers offer him valuable life and professional lessons beyond those from his own trainer, Coach Carl Lokko, and manager Sammy Anim Addo.

With a perfect record in his first U.S. fight and undefeated in 14 bouts overall, Laryea remains focused on his journey to becoming one of the world’s top boxers. “I am still learning and committed to my training as I pursue greatness,” he said.

Apart from his career ambitions, Laryea expressed a deep connection to the children in his Bukom and Jamestown community, encouraging parents to invest in their children’s futures. Reflecting on his past, Laryea credited Coach Lokko and Sammy Anim Addo with guiding him away from a potentially troubled path, a change he attributes to divine luck and patience. “Rushing leads to crashing,” he advised his Bronx Boxing Club teammates.

He also thanked his international manager, Peter Kahn, for providing essential moral support.

Floyd Mayweather Ordered to Pay $2.4 Million to Nigerian Firm Over Unfulfilled African Tour

Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather has been ordered by a California court to pay $2.4 million to Nigerian company Zzini Media Concept Limited after a breach of contract concerning promotional visits to African countries, including Nigeria. The legal dispute began when Mayweather failed to follow through on a 2017 agreement to tour Africa, starting with Nigeria, as per his deal with Zzini Media.

The California Court of Appeal recently upheld the lower court’s decision, ordering Mayweather to pay $1,638,542 in damages, $721,881.32 in prejudgment interest, $16,270 in attorney fees, and $285 in court costs. Despite attempts by Mayweather’s team to contest the ruling, the court found him liable for fraud and breach of contract, enforcing a financial penalty to compensate Zzini Media Concept.

Sammy Anim Addo Confident John Laryea Will Shine in U.S. Debut

Bronx Boxing Promotions CEO and manager of WBO Africa Featherweight Champion, Sammy Anim Addo, is confident his fighter, John Laryea, will make a strong impression in his debut fight in the United States on Friday, November 1. Known as the “Expensive Boxer,” Laryea will take on Nicaragua’s Alexander Mejia in a featherweight matchup.

Mejia (19-9-0) has faced five consecutive losses, giving Laryea an opportunity to extend his opponent’s struggles. According to Anim Addo, Laryea—a two-time WBO Africa champion—is an underrated talent who has defied expectations to reach this milestone. He emphasized that a victory in this debut could open doors for other aspiring boxers training at the Bronx Boxing Club in James Town, Accra.

As Laryea and Coach Carl Lokko left Accra for Orlando, Florida, Bronx Boxing Club members, along with friends and supporters, wished him success in his American debut at the Caribe Royale venue.
