Ghanaian super middleweight contender Sena Agbeko believes Canelo Alvarez’s reluctance to fight David Benavidez stems from a perceived lack of respect from Benavidez and his camp.
In an exclusive interview with ChannelOne Sports, Agbeko, who is preparing to face Osleys Iglesias in Canada on August 17, shared his insights on the situation. Agbeko last fought in 2023, losing to David Morrell by knockout in the second round.
Agbeko, who assisted Alvarez in training for his bout against Jaimie Munguia, speculated that the disrespect Benavidez has shown Alvarez is the main reason for Alvarez’s avoidance of the fight.
“I was with Canelo for seven weeks preparing him for Jaimie Munguia and had the opportunity to ask him about the Benavidez situation. Personally, I think it’s a matter of respect for him,” Agbeko said.
“He’s the man right now, in a position of power and influence. He feels that Benavidez and his team have disrespected him on numerous occasions. When someone has the power to impact your life and you’ve displeased them, they might choose to affect your life,” Agbeko added.

Black Princesses head coach Yussif Basigi has announced that his team plans to arrive in Colombia at least a week before the start of the 2024 FIFA Women’s Under 20 World Cup to acclimatize.
The tournament, held from August 31 to September 22 in Colombia, marks Ghana’s sixth consecutive appearance at the competition. Ghana is drawn into Group E, alongside Austria, New Zealand, and former world champions Japan. The top two teams from each group will advance to the next stage.
The Black Princesses aim to progress to the Round of 16 for the first time, and Basigi believes that arriving early to adjust to the altitude in Colombia will be crucial.
“The authorities concerned know what it takes. The timeline is also a factor, so we need to acclimatize because over there we have altitude. I know we will get there some weeks or days before the competition begins,” Basigi stated.
