On Friday, May 24th, 2024, the Ghana Football Association, through its GFA Foundation, will introduce the innovative Ghana Prisons Project. This Football for Development initiative seeks to harness the transformative power of football to enhance the welfare, rehabilitation, and societal reintegration of Ghana’s prison inmates.
The GFA Foundation will equip several prison facilities nationwide with essential football gear, including jerseys, balls, gloves, and goalposts, alongside items like whistles and caution cards. Moreover, it will conduct coaching, refereeing, and mentorship programs for both inmates and prison officers.
Additionally, the Foundation will host advocacy workshops to raise awareness about the harmful effects of discrimination and stigma against prisons and prisoners, aligning with its mission to leverage football for positive social change.
As the social investment and sustainability arm of the GFA, the Foundation aims to uplift lives within football communities and beyond.
Partnering with the Ghana Prisons Service, the state institution responsible for maintaining internal security and operating a humane penal system, underscores the project’s commitment to legal compliance and societal benefit.
By providing inmates with regular physical activity and fostering a positive outlook on life, the project aims to counteract boredom, disillusionment, and apathy, thereby promoting well-being and resilience.
Notably, this initiative marks the first time a Football Association globally has spearheaded such a project, setting a precedent for using football as a tool for rehabilitation and societal integration. Previous endeavors of this nature have typically been led by football clubs and NGOs in other regions.

Asante Kotoko striker Steven Desse Mukwala has earned a place in coach Paul Put’s 27-man squad for Uganda’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Algeria.
The Cranes of Uganda are set to face Botswana on June 7th before taking on Algeria on June 10th, marking their return to Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, for the first time since 2019.
Despite Asante Kotoko’s inconsistent performance in the Ghana Premier League, Mukwala has maintained impressive form, emerging as the club’s top scorer with 11 goals and 2 assists in 25 games.
His stellar contributions have not gone unnoticed, earning him a call-up for the World Cup qualifiers scheduled for next month.
Mukwala previously featured for Uganda in their match against the Black Stars during the March international break, where he successfully converted a penalty in the Cranes’ 2-2 draw against Ghana.
Having faced two matches in Group F without a win, the Cranes are keen to bolster their performance, with the team set to enter residential camp on May 30th, 2024.

His visit included meetings with President Mnangagwa and officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, where they discussed potential investments in various sectors.
Reflecting on his discussions, Gyan expressed his eagerness to invest in Zimbabwe, particularly in areas such as immunization and pandemic management, recognizing numerous opportunities for growth.
Gyan, whose net worth exceeds US$40 million, emphasized the importance of successful African footballers reinvesting in their home countries, leveraging their networks and resources for the continent’s benefit. He stressed the significance of utilizing iconic figures to drive development initiatives, highlighting the potential for sports development across Africa.
Regarding sports development, Gyan emphasized the need for improved infrastructure to nurture young talent effectively, drawing parallels with European standards.
Despite his professional career spanning back to 2003, Gyan gained global recognition for his outstanding performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he played a pivotal role for Ghana. Despite a notable missed penalty in a crucial match against Uruguay, Gyan’s impact on African football remains significant.

Reports circulating in the media suggest that Ghana’s striker Inaki Williams may be ruled out of the Black Stars’ upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

Danish club FC Nordsjaelland has secured the services of promising Ghanaian youngster, Levy Nene, who has signed a long-term contract after catching the eye with his performances at the Gothia Cup where his academy emerged triumphant.
Nene, aged 18, follows in the footsteps of his friend Caleb Yirenkyi, also 18, who made a similar move from the Right to Dream Academy earlier this spring.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the transfer, Nene said, “Signing with FC Nordsjælland is a dream come true. I’m thrilled to be part of such a talented setup and eager to contribute my best on the field.”
Nene joins fellow Ghanaian talent Araphat Mohammed at FC Nordsjaelland for the upcoming 2024-25 season, aiming to emulate the success stories of former academy graduates like Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana who have blossomed into top stars at the club.
