Ghana captain Andre Ayew has underscored the profound significance of wearing the national team jersey, highlighting the necessity for resilience and perseverance.
Since his debut in 2007, Ayew has been a central figure in the team, participating in eight Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and three FIFA World Cups.
Despite enduring disappointments in both AFCON and World Cup competitions during his tenure as captain, Ayew faces mounting pressure to perform, even amidst calls for senior players like himself to step aside for younger talent.
Speaking to Canal+, as quoted by CAF Online, Ayew acknowledged the immense pressure on the team, stating, “There is a lot of pressure. Despite this generation dominating, we still couldn’t win so this creates more pressure and more demands, and the country expects more and more.”
While recognizing the relative lack of experience among younger players, Ayew expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome challenges. He emphasized the weight of wearing the national team jersey, describing it as a symbol cherished by millions of people and requiring broad shoulders to bear its weight.
Looking towards the future, Ayew remained optimistic, asserting, “I know we will bounce back. We work. We are going through a bad time. But we will get through this, I am sure.”
Ayew is expected to feature in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

While there were no issues with the baton change during Day Two of the World Relays, Ghana previously faced challenges at the Penn Relays, where a delayed baton change hindered their performance. Additionally, a dropped baton during Day One of the World Relays and a delayed change at the African Games contributed to setbacks.
