Ghanaian high jumper, Evans Yamoah Cadman, stole the show at the University of Ghana Stadium as he soared to a remarkable gold medal victory in the men’s high jump event on the final day of athletics at the ongoing African Games.
Supported by an enthusiastic crowd, including students from his alma mater, the University of Ghana, Cadman displayed exceptional skill and determination as he cleared a height of 2.23m, securing the top spot on the podium ahead of Morocco’s Hammouda Saad and South Africa’s Benjamin Links Mpho.
This achievement marked a new Personal Best for the final year student at the University of Central Missouri.
Cadman’s performance was nothing short of impressive. After breezing through heights, starting from 2.05m, he effortlessly cleared the bar six times, needing only one jump for all but one height.
The title was clinched at 2.23m, where both Saad and Mpho faltered while Cadman soared over the bar on his third attempt, celebrating in iconic fashion with a ‘siuuuu’ gesture reminiscent of football star Cristiano Ronaldo. The stadium erupted in celebration as Cadman basked in the glory of his victory, engaging with the ecstatic fans.
Although he attempted 2.25m, Cadman was unable to clear the height in three tries.
Ghana’s success continued on the track, with Joseph Paul Amoah securing the 200m title earlier in the day. With Cadman’s gold, Ghana completed a high jump double, with Rose Yebaoh also clinching gold in the women’s event.

Captain of the Black Princesses, Afi Amenyaku, emphasized the team’s unwavering belief in their ability to overturn the situation after conceding the opening goal against Nigeria in the African Games women’s football final.
Despite falling behind early in the match, Ghana rallied to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Super Falconets at Cape Coast Sports Stadium, claiming the gold medal.
The setback occurred in the 23rd minute when Amenyaku’s error led to Nigeria taking the lead. However, Ghana regrouped during halftime, dominating proceedings in the second half and ultimately equalizing through Tracey Twum, forcing the game into extra time.
The decisive goal came in the ninth minute of extra time when Abdulai Mukarama capitalized on a pass from Maafia Nyame, slotting a low shot past the Nigerian goalkeeper to seal Ghana’s triumph.
In an interview with Joy Sports post-match, Amenyaku revealed the team’s confidence in their ability to bounce back, stating, “We knew we would come back stronger [after conceding the first goal]. We weren’t scared of anything.”
Looking ahead, Amenyaku expressed the team’s focus on the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia later in the year, urging Ghanaians to continue supporting them.
With the victory at Cape Coast Stadium, Ghana has now emerged victorious in their recent encounters with Nigeria in finals, including the WAFU B U-20 Cup held in Kumasi last year.

Black Princesses’ goalkeeper, Afi Amenyaku, expressed her elation at leading the team to gold at the African Games, describing it as a “dream come true” moment for her.
Amenyaku played a pivotal role in all five of Ghana’s matches at the 2023 African Games, culminating in their victory over Nigeria for the gold medal at Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday night.
Despite an early setback with a mistake in the 23rd minute that allowed Nigeria to take the lead, Amenyaku and her teammates, under the guidance of Yusif Basigi, rallied admirably. Goals from Tracey Twum and Abdulai Mukarama in the second half and extra time respectively secured Ghana’s victory, marking their fourth medal in the last four editions of the Games.
In an interview with Joy Sports, the team’s captain expressed her joy, saying, “It’s a dream come true for me as the captain; leading the team to gold because this is the first time captaining the team in a tournament. I am very happy to be able to win gold.”
Amenyaku had previously been part of the Ghana team that triumphed over Nigeria in the inaugural edition of the WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup held in Kumasi the previous year, where she notably made two crucial saves during the penalty shootout in the final.
With the African Games victory secured, the Black Princesses will now shift their focus to the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana’s U-20 women’s soccer team, the Black Princesses, clinched their 11th gold medal at the ongoing African Games with a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Nigeria at Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday night.
The match started with a setback for Ghana as goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku’s error in the penalty box allowed Nigeria’s Edeh Njideka to capitalize and put Nigeria ahead in the 23rd minute.
Undeterred, the Black Princesses displayed resilience and dominated the remainder of the first half, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert.
Buoyed by the enthusiastic support of the home crowd, Yussif Basigi’s squad finally found the equalizer in the 77th minute when Tracy Twum struck a powerful shot into the net from the left flank.
With neither team able to break the deadlock in regulation time, the match went into extra time.
In the 9th minute of extra time, Mukarama Abdulai secured the victory for Ghana by calmly controlling a well-placed pass inside the box and slotting a low shot into the bottom corner, sending the stadium into a frenzy of celebration.
Despite a late surge from Nigeria, the Black Princesses held on to claim the win.
This triumph marks Ghana’s second gold medal in the women’s football event at the African Games, with their previous victory coming in the 2015 edition, also under the guidance of coach Yussif Basigi.
