Selorm ‘Spiderman’ Darko Defeats Edmund ‘Karma Ba’ Akator to Retain WKU African Pro Title

Atukpai-based kickboxer Selorm Darko, also known as “Spiderman,” secured his 17th career victory with a decisive knockout win over Edmund Akator, aka ‘Karma Ba,’ to successfully defend his WKU African Pro title. The bout, held last Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium’s Sports Hall, saw Selorm end the fight in 1 minute and 46 seconds of the third round.

The event, organized by the WKU in collaboration with the Ghana Kickboxing Association and supported by Itel, Decathlon, and Twellium, attracted a large crowd who enjoyed a night of kickboxing, boxing, and MMA action.

Steavano Tuekpe, Vice President of the Ghana Kickboxing Association, praised the fighters and expressed plans to host more events every three months, with the next promotion slated for December. Former association president Nii Adote Dzata I also commended the organization and encouraged fighters to continue training hard for future challenges.

Coach Doku, whose fighter emerged victorious, emphasized that kickboxing is an exciting and safe sport, urging the youth, especially girls, to take up training for self-defense.

National athletes Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah, Cynthia Mensah, and Nasaara Quansah, who represent Ghana in Track & Field, are among 32 individuals and organizations set to be honored at the 10th Women In Sports Association (WISA) Achievers Awards. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Gold medalist Perpetual Naa Ayikailey Okaijah, who excelled in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the 13th African Games, is also among the awardees. Other notable honorees include handball player Vida Baffowaa, hockey stars Lawrentia Okine and Hagar Laryea, and international fencer Kelsey Woname.

Four female journalists—Aniela Allotey (TV3), Doreen Lamptey (Obonu TV and GTV Sports), Naa Deide Sampah, and Awurabena Adzi (HSTV)—along with male media figures Sammy Heywood Okine (GOC), Prince Annang (Max TV), Theophilus Sampah (GTV), and John Phil Quartey (Metro TV) will be recognized for their contributions to women’s sports.

Supporters Rashida Iddi and Abigail Twumasiwaa Okantah, as well as distinguished figures such as Mrs. Patience Baffoe Bonnie and Captain Andy Sam, are also on the list of honorees.

Event organizer Madam Gloria Commodore noted that due to a lack of corporate sponsorship, this might be the final edition of the awards unless a company steps in to support future events.

Yussif Adam, known as Bboy Nagi, was declared the champion of the 2024 Afro Break Ghana National Championship after defeating defending champion Bboy Blesso in a thrilling final at Usher Fort near Jamestown, Accra. The two-day event, organized by Afro Breaking Academy in collaboration with the Breaking Federation of Ghana and the French Embassy, drew a large crowd and was hailed as a success by founder Bboy Lyrixs.

In the semi-finals, Bboy Blesso, the 2023 champion, overcame Bboy Kofi Black, while Bboy Nagi defeated Bboy Eyez. Bgirl Iyani claimed victory over Bgirl Vikz in the female category, and in the All-Star Team contest, Hubes from Korle Gonno outperformed One Ghana from Kotobabi in a closely fought battle.

Nine-year-old Bboy Emma dazzled spectators with his skills but ultimately finished second to his 17-year-old competitor, while Bgirl Ivix triumphed in the new entrants category.

Bboy Lyrixs (Nana Tufour Okai) expressed pride in the event’s success and noted the Academy’s continuous efforts to discover and nurture new talent. He also reiterated the Breaking Federation’s goal of representing Ghana at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, after narrowly missing out on the chance to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The highly anticipated ‘Hands of Gold’ Boxing Show, originally set for the Treehouse Restaurant in Labone, has been relocated to the Bukom Boxing Arena due to increased ticket demand.

Hon. Emmanuel Okai Laryea of Shiatse Promotions announced ticket prices, with 50 GHC for the Popular Stand and 500 GHC for VIP, which includes food and drinks for patrons. He emphasized the boxing talent within Ga Mashie, Odododiodoo, and Ashiedu Ketete, stressing the importance of managing the sport to benefit all stakeholders.

Mr. Sawan Papa Nii Amoa of Legacy Promotions, co-organizers of the event, aims to deliver one of the most unforgettable shows at the iconic venue. He promised a blend of entertainment and sport, ensuring a spectacular and explosive night.

The show will feature UK-based boxer Freezy Macbones, while the WBO Africa Bantamweight title fight will see Ghana’s rising star, undefeated Daniel Gorsh (aka Selasie), take on seasoned Beninese fighter Ghislain Vodounhessi.

Additional bouts on the undercard include appearances by Gideon Nortey, Felix Nunoo, Azumah Mohammed, Ben Abbey, and Isaac Neequaye.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, Samuel Takyi, also known as the “Ring Warrior,” is the latest standout boxer added to the lineup for Cabic Big Fight Night Two. The event will take place at the Idrowhyt Events Centre in Dansoman on Friday, September 13, with the official weigh-in scheduled for Thursday morning at the venue.

Matchmaker Dan Donkor promises an exciting card featuring some of the most promising talent in Ghanaian boxing. The headline bout will see Emmanuel Mankatah face off against Sunday Adeleye.

Other fighters set to showcase their skills include Elvis Ahorgah, nicknamed “Soldier Boxer,” along with Emmanuel Quaye, Emmanuel Mawuli, Gideon Nartey, Michael Darko, Kofi Dana, Jedidiah Doku, Theophilus Allotey, and Mohammed Aryetey—all former members of the Black Bombers.
