As the countdown begins for the 13th African Games scheduled from March 8 to 23, 2024, the Local Organising Committee (LOC), in collaboration with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has organized a seminar to enlighten and guide the media on crucial aspects of the upcoming continental multi-sports event, a first-time occurrence in Ghana.
The well-attended seminar held at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Tesano aimed to inform, caution, and educate the media on various aspects of the event. With 10 different venues across Accra set to host 30 sporting disciplines, including those vying for qualification to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the event is further supported by the historic inclusion of Cape Coast to host female football.
Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, Executive Chairman of the LOC, emphasized the importance of positive reporting for socio-economic development and national cohesion. He urged everyone not to miss the opportunity presented by hosting such a significant event in Ghana.
Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, commended the media for their keen interest and support for the Games and various federations. The President of SWAG encouraged journalists to showcase Ghanaian hospitality and network, expressing gratitude to President Nana Akufo Addo for ensuring peace and unity among the Games’ stakeholders and facilitating the readiness of all facilities.
Mr. George Lomotey, Deputy Director TV of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), extended an invitation to all media houses to cover the opening ceremony of the 13th Africa Games for free. He outlined the accreditation process, emphasizing that non-rights holders, including social media operatives, YouTubers, and bloggers, need to register with the GBC and the LOC for accreditation.
Mr. Ernest Danso, the Chef Du Mission of Team Ghana, shared that nearly 500 athletes are in camp, undergoing preparations under optimal conditions, with experts attending to their nutrition, physical fitness, and psychological needs.
Various presenters covered topics such as the accreditation process, transport, catering and accommodation, sponsorship and marketing, legal and security matters, the fan zone, the Games Torch, and guidelines for the Games Village and Media Center, located at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The seminar, attended by members of the Ghana Sports Supporters, provided valuable insights into the extensive preparations for the 13th African Games, anticipating the participation of over 5000 athletes, 3000 volunteers, 2000 technical officers, and 1200 guests in Accra in 2023.

On Wednesday, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), motivated the Black Queens to give their all in the quest for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Leading a delegation from the GOC to visit the team at the Accra Sports Stadium, he urged the players to ensure Ghana’s representation in football at the global sporting event.
Expressing unwavering support, Mr. Mensah stated that the GOC was fully behind the Black Queens and would closely follow their journey to secure the Olympic ticket, a feat they aim to achieve for the first time.
“We want to see you make it to the Paris Games this year, so we allocated $45,000 to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at the start of the qualifiers as our support to facilitate the team’s journey to the Olympic Games,” he affirmed.
The GOC President detailed the financial assistance provided, with an initial $9,000 followed by an additional release of $22,900, and an outstanding $13,200 earmarked for further preparations.
Addressing the players, Mr. Mensah emphasized the significance of the upcoming game against Zambia, urging them to treat it as a do-or-die affair. He expressed confidence in the Black Queens, stressing that they must not miss out on the Paris Olympics Games.
Highlighting the broader impact, he stated that Ghanaians were counting on the team to bring back the love for football and emphasized that the GOC has already prepared the team’s camping base in France in anticipation of their qualification.
Coach Nora Hauptle, expressing gratitude for the timely visit, assured the GOC President that the team would give their best to secure the Olympic ticket. The Black Queens, just two qualifiers away from their first-ever Olympic Games appearance, will host the Copper Queens of Zambia in the first leg of the third-round qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium. In a friendly warm-up game against local club side Berry Ladies, the Queens secured a 2-1 victory.

Lomotey emphasized that non-rights holders, including social media operators, YouTubers, and bloggers, need to register with both the GBC and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Games to obtain accreditation. With only 15 days remaining until the Games commence, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, Executive Chairman of the LOC, urged media coverage to focus on positive reporting, highlighting the event’s impact on the economy and national cohesion.
“We can’t let this opportunity go by. There’s a lot to be gained from this event being hosted in Ghana,” expressed Dr. Ofosu Asare.
During the seminar, members of the LOC Media subcommittee, including the Chef Du Mission of Team Ghana, Mr. Ernest Danso, addressed questions from journalists. Head Coach Morley Byekwaso of Uganda Hippos has unveiled the 23-man squad for the upcoming Dire Cup in Ethiopia. This tournament holds significant importance as it serves as a crucial preparatory event leading up to the All Africa Games 2023 Tournament in Accra, Ghana.
Following an intensive six-day training camp at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, which included rigorous training sessions and trials, the team is set to participate in the Dire Cup in Ethiopia from February 24th to 28th, 2024.
The final squad, carefully selected by Coach Byekwaso, is scheduled to depart for Ethiopia on Thursday morning (11 AM) via Ethiopian Airlines. The participating nations in the Dire Cup include Uganda, hosts Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya.
Coach Byekwaso emphasized that the tournament in Ethiopia is not just a competition but a strategic opportunity to fine-tune strategies and evaluate team dynamics before the All Africa Games. He expressed confidence in his squad, stating, “The Dire Cup is a crucial phase in our journey. Selecting the final 23 was challenging, and narrowing it down to 20 for such a major tournament is an even more intricate task. However, I believe in the potential of this team, and we aim to harvest the best for the All Africa Games.”
The Dire Cup will serve as a precursor for the All Africa Games scheduled from March 7th to 22nd, 2024, in Accra, Ghana.
