Stephen Appiah Labels Playing Qualifiers Outside Ghana a “National Embarrassment

Black Stars legend Stephen Appiah has expressed his disappointment following CAF’s ruling that the Baba Yara Sports Stadium is unfit to host international matches, calling the situation a “national embarrassment.” The decision leaves Ghana without a suitable stadium to host international or Category 3 games.

The Baba Yara pitch, long criticized for its poor condition, was the last approved venue for such matches in Ghana. Both Ghana and Angola’s coaches condemned the pitch after Ghana’s 1-0 AFCON qualifier loss to Angola.

In a viral post on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Appiah, who captained Ghana to its first World Cup in 2006, stated, “Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride.”
